How to use

  1. Scrape away the coating to expose shiny metal before first use.
  2. Hold the ferro rod close to the tinder at about a 45-degree angle. Place the scraper near the top of the rod.
  3. Pull the rod back (away from the tinder) with a slow and steady motion.

This ferro rod throws a ton of sparks. I have tried a lot of ferro rods and this is the best so far. With a little correct tinder this rod will easily make a fire every time. Cheaper than some of the big name ferro rods and better quality in my opinion. Definitely will purchase again.

I liked the price of this and the size. It throws plenty of sparks with my knives. Easy to fit 7 strand paracord through the predrilled hole.

Using a split ring, this 3/8" D by 4" L ferrocerium rod seems a perfect size for being able to pocket carry and hold in hand for fire starting while backpacking / camping. I use a Nite Ize G-Biner, gating in the "secure" area the split ring of a ceramic micro-knife/striker in the secure section (along with split rings of a microlight and a small capsule with a few Epiphany Outdoors fire-fuze fire-starters) and gating in the "easy access" area the split ring of this ferrocerium rod (so I can detach it easily for striking a spark with either the ceramic knife/striker or the spine of my actual knife. The Baylite rod has the girth and length for perhaps a lifetime of easy held-in-hand use (i.e., no glued-on handle covering useable material), and, with the right striker/scraper material and edge, Baylite ferro rods throw great sparks. I can recommend Baylite's striker or one of the many ceramic strikers being sold or the small ceramic "micro knife" whose exposed spine when closed works just as well as a very effective striker. To my belt I Lark's-Head a loop of cord that passes through the G-Biner "secure" area, and drop the G-Biner into my pocket. Additionally, it is a good idea to add a mini-whistle and a microlight to this Outdoor EDC setup, clipping them into the "secure" area of the G-Biner also.

This is one of the best backup fire starters around. On Alone they use it as their primary fire starter. It works.

I have a good knife in my cook tote for camping but no ferro rod. I could have used one last weekend. This arrived today and it works great! I chose this size because I won't use it often but just big enough to hold easily.

Bayite Ferro rods are definitely my favorites. I've tried the 4", 5" and the 6". The larger ones(6"X 1/2") are easier to hold and produce more sparks(Especially if you're in a snowstorm and close to hypothermia). Believe me, it's the best $5 you'll ever spend. The most important thing to remember is to scrape off the top layer of coating on the slim strip you intend to strike ONLY. I believe most, if not all negative ratings are from people that skipped that step. The coating is there to protect the rod during storage...until it is sold and then used at some time in the future. The coating prevents oxygen from damaging the rod and extends the life of the rod. For striking, I recommend using the Bayite pro striker. You can also use the spine of your knife blade as long as it has a sharp 90 degree edge. High Carbon Steel blades are best. You can also use the spine of an old jigsaw blade piece(2-3 inches in length is best). I store my Ferro Rod in a ziplock bag. Bayite Ferro rods are the best of all the brands I've tried. The bigger, the better!!

Can't complain about how it works. Yes, it throws decent sparks when using sharp edge. My only complaint is that it is advertised as 3/8", but when it wouldn't fit in the ferro rod holder on my custom sheath, I found that it is closer to .390". More ferro rod is not a bad thing, but only when it is advertised as something else, hence 4 instead of 5 stars. I ended up drilling out the Kydex holder, and now it fits fine. Life is good.

This is most excellent! I'm ordering more and in various sizes for different applications and teaching local scouts. After reading the reviews and watching a very poor video, I ordered one of these for my go-bag after giving my last stick away in the Congo. It arrived before the due date, in a fairly large Amazon box, with no padding, so it was rattle-ling around inside.. no big deal.I opened the box to find the Ferro Rod in a very nice and smartly packaged smaller box.I kind of shook my head a little since this thing is smaller than a ball point pen, so why not a small envelope???I'm not an overzealous environmentalist, but I sure hate the package overkill.Back to the rod, VERY COOL!!!!After watching some amateur video in the reviews, I shook my head in disgust! (poor chucklehead nearly cut himself with his own knife)I took out the ferro rod and with the first strike of my puny 2"; bladed lanyard knife, I shot sparks across my desk and nearly started a fire in my office.Technique is important, just like with weapons... they're only as good as the person using them, and this rod is just too easy to use. This rod is just perfect and with the protective coating it's even better.I'll be getting several more of these to take back into central Africa and distribute to some of my friends in the bush.A small recommendation would be to apply a comfortable metal key ring/loop to the small lanyard hole to enable a better grip when striking and also making it easier to attach it to a small d-ring or clip on your go bag.Safe and Fun Adventures My Friends................. Happy Trails : )
