Dogs who become excited when going out and are curious about other animals, people, and other things will often make people nervous and tired when using the regular collar and harness

HOW DOES A HEAD COLLAR WORK?

Head collars work on the principle that if you can control your dog’s head, then the body will follow.

Pressure is applied to the nose and released when your dog stops pulling. Praising your dog for walking well positively reinforces the good behaviour we desire.

If you are concerned that your dog is a very heavy puller and may slip out of the collar and escape from it at the beginning of training, it's a good idea to use a double-ended training lead. Clip one end to the head collar and the other to a backup collar.

We got XL size for our Lab mix, made sure it adjusted properly and it would slide inside the dog mouth every time she pulled. We constantly had to stop and fix it.

I found this to be quality made with a comfort band across my dogs nose. This has been a game changer with walking my dog. He no longer pulls and is happy by my side.

If you have a medium or large-sized dog who is strong enough to get away from you while you’re out on a walk, then this is the collar for you. I used to be no match for my golden retriever if he saw a squirrel, deer, or another dog—he got away from me numerous times which, as you know, can be quite terrifying.A dog trainer introduced this head collar to me about 3 years ago. I won’t lie—my dog absolutely HATED it at first. I almost gave up because the first 2 or 3 weeks were torture—trying to put the collar on my dog and go for a walk was less than fun. But I am so thankful that I persisted. My pup has 100% NEVER gotten away from me since he’s been wearing this collar. It gives me incredible peace of mind to know that he will not be able to get away from me, no matter what or who we encounter on our walks. It’s a bit confusing trying to figure out how this collar fits on your dog, but the included instructions are quite good. Take a few minutes to read them. You can also access a training video (via a QR code included on the instruction sheet) to help you figure everything out. The collar should fit high up on your dog’s head—right behind his ears. This particular collar is very well made. The part that fits around the snout is padded for comfort and also has a reflective strip sewn into it.I highly, highly recommend this collar. It is well worth the time and effort involved in getting your pup used to the collar. It’s life changing!!

I have been using Halti and Gentle Leaders for years and highly recommend them over any chest harness for a difficult to train dog. This is just as good if not better than Halti, and I recommend this style over a Gentle Leader for any dog where slipping out might be dangerous, this style cannot be slipped off if fit correctly. The straps might be slightly wider than the Halti brand, but I view that as a positive. I have not issues making the minor adjustments to make the XL fit either my Pyrenees or Anatolian Shepherd. If you need more training or fitment instructions than what are provided you could easily use everything that Halti puts out for their harnesses.

I like the gentle leader collars, I think they work quite well. This one however has a bit of a drawback. While it does work, it's issue is more of how it's made, the latch that hangs from the bottom is way too long and my dog, who gets frustrated with the fact she has something around her mouth, will put her paw up to get it off and her paw always gets caught in the part hanging down, then she's stuck and I have to get her out. This is frustrating when it happens and it would be much better if it was shorter or perhaps if there was a way to make it short but there isn't.

Finally, a head collar / leader leash that is easy to put on!! I’ve tried other brands and they are so difficult to figure them out never mind try to get them on a squirming dog. This lead is so easy to put on! And there’s a safety clasp you can put on your dogs regular collar so there’s no chance of escape. This lead definitely works- my dogs do NOT like beings pulled back and they immediately release pressure and remember their leash manners. And because it’s so fast and simple to put on, they don’t hate it because there’s no drama putting it on.The XL fits my 55lb Catahoula and my 75lb GSD puppy. It’s very easy to adjust the size. One of the best nose leashes out there. It’s so simple to put on, you’ll actually use it!

We’ve used this off and on for several weeks now using positive reinforcement when he walks politely and it does make somewhat of a difference, but our furry boy didn’t hear the theory “if you can control your dog’s head, then the body will follow”. The first couple of times using it our he was caught off guard by having this around his muzzle and was pretty good without much effort. By the third outing, he started falling back into his old ways of pulling. My concern with this head collar is neck strain or injury by him suddenly pulling or lunging that would jerk his head back or even if I should make a correction that’s not gentle enough. My dog and I were surprised on one walk by 3 dogs lunging at us from behind a picket fence and my dog reacted so strongly I feared he would injure his neck. I had no way of controlling him (50 lbs.) since I didn’t want to risk a neck injury by pulling hard on this head collar. Since then, I’ve attached one end of a double leash to the head collar clip under his muzzle and the other clip to the back of his harness (as shown in photos). I’m afraid to attach the second clip to his regular collar for fear of throat injury if he should be surprised and pull frantically again. With the second clip attached to the back of his harness I can rein him in by pulling on the lead connecting to the harness instead of pulling on the lead clipped to the head collar and risking injury to his neck or throat. I realize we still have training issues with our furry boy, and we can’t expect a certain collar to solve our problems, but this style of collar makes me nervous since any abrupt pull, lunge, or jerk could potentially cause injury.
