All I can say going into this is holy complicated. This device is more versatile than my old one, but the first time I tried to use it for a water change in the aquarium, I kept one of the connectors in the middle that caused water to leak everywhere. Barring that, we were able to get it working pretty well. The wand is extremely long, so we didn’t use all of the extension handles, but this is good because it allows for variability based on your needs. The filter sponge is very limited and I’m not sure if it didn’t a better job of actually cleaning than our older simpler ones.

I have a 20-gallon long aquarium tank which the height of the tank is about 12in. I used black sand as subrate and I always had issues cleaning the sand as the siphon is often too strong and will remove wastes and sand. I got the gravel cleaner because it indicated that it could clean sand. In the recycle mode, itt did a great job cleaning up the sand without removing them or cleaning the sand which I was really surprised and happy about. Unfortunately, the unit created a big water-splashing mess as well. To recycle the water, it needed to have the sponge filter attached. The water will come out directly from the sponge filter instead of the hose exit knob. What the item description doesn't show you is that the cleaning head to the filter sponge is about 15 inches. So in my 20-gal long tank, the water comes out uncontrollably from 3 in above my tank which created a ton of wet mess. The problem is that the water needs to have a controlled exit. So I connected with the siphon configuration. I went to the hardware store to get a 1/2" female thread adapter (~$1.50). I shortened/cut the hose and attached to the siphon knob/handle and the 1/2" adapter which is attached to the filter. Now I can control how the water exits. It also allows me to use a stronger pull and I can direct the strong flow exit to stir up the water in a way in which the flow with waste particles will be sucked up. Overall it's a good unit, I wished it came with the adapter.

I had high hopes for this aquarium cleaner, however it is pretty disappointing without custom modification. It does work to suck up waste from my sand/gravel, and the pump is pretty powerful, but the water just gets spit out the end of the filter. It is impossible to attach any type of drain hose to it, you are stuck with it just fall out. Which for me meant on a few occasions I accidentally spilled water outside of the tank. How annoying. The worst part is the filter doesn't do ANYTHING. It sucks up water and waste, and spits "clean" water out, and I would have assumed the filter caught the waste. Nope. Cleaning the filter showed barely any waste. So where did it go? I think it just blends it up real well and spits it back into my tank. Yuck. Not what I wanted. Fortunately you can put a better filter in, one not nearly as porous, and it works much better.

⚠️ Save your money—this gravel vacuum/water change wand is a total flop. The instructions are fairly easy to read, and the pictures help guide you through the assembly process. Unfortunately, that’s about the only thing that works properly.🐟 Leaks EverywhereI followed the instructions carefully and assembled it three times on my own. When it didn’t work, I had a friend (who’s experienced with aquascaping and regularly uses gravel vacuums) help me put it together a fourth time. Still no luck. The vacuum simply won’t pull water up to the outlet for water changes. Instead, water sprays out of nearly every joint.🐟 Tried Fixing It—Still UselessThinking the problem might be faulty o-rings, I went the extra mile: • Bought new o-rings and even brought the wand with me to make sure I got the right fit. • Installed the new o-rings—same problem. Water still leaked everywhere, and the vacuum still refused to work.🐟 Completely Fails as a Gravel VacuumIf the water change function wasn’t bad enough, the vacuuming feature is just as useless. When I tried using it as a sand/gravel vacuum, it didn’t lift a single grain of sand.🐟 Great Idea, Awful ExecutionThe concept behind this product is solid, but the execution? I’d be impressed if it could get any worse. Purchasing this would be a $70 mistake.Do yourself a favor—save your money.

This is NOT a great sand CLEANER. The suction is to strong and there isn't anything preventing sand from getting in the mechanism. That said, this is a WIZ for water changes. It makes water changes very easy and fast. It's good for getting gunk out of your gravel.

I tried to use this to do a water change instead of my trusty manual siphoning hose because why not?First, the instructions are useless. There are pictures showing how to assemble the wand, but the instructions are incomplete and not helpful.I followed the pictures, even checking back here so that I could see what it should look line when assembled correctly. The wand is quite cumbersome for a smaller tank, but the extensions could be useful for a larger, deeper tank. I only needed one for my tank.Once I thought I had it figured out (and realized that you need to connect the tubing to the wand as well, though it's not in the instructions for some reason), I plugged it in and turned it on. I immediately had water spraying everywhere from the wand. It didn't even make it to the drain tube.Needless to say, I turned it off immediately. This is a lot of assembly work for what is is and I guess with trial and error you could probably figure out how to make it work properly, but to be honest, this was not worth the hassle. I could start a siphon and have most of my water out of the tank before even getting this thing put together and with a lot less mess.
