We have another one that is now 8 yrs old and still working. Got a new one for a second water tank for this winter. I'm surprised my 1st one has lasted this long especially since we have a horse that likes to pull it out of the water tank and drop it on the ground (alot). Picked this for our second one because we have good luck with the 1st one we bought years ago. Glad they are still making them.

This is magic and wonderful. Hubby didn’t have to break ice so cattle could drink water! This little heater worked! It heated the cattle trough. His friends were Jealous of this magical modern water heater. This is a wonderful invention.

Used this in my above ground 100 gallon galvanized steel trough to keep it from freezing and to protect my sarasa goldfish. It kept the water from freezing. I like that it’s not constantly heating and only turned on when below a certain temp which I can’t remember what that is. I check the water temp with an instant read the monitor and was very happy to know it was working properly.

over the many years of owning several of these units, I consistently get 3-5 years of usefulness out of one of these heaters. They are powerful and can keep the coldest stock tanks thawed but their durability could be improved. I've had heating elements curl and burn the plastic body of the unit, the plastic around where the cord comes onto the unit cracks all the way around. The design could definitely be improved upon but for what it is, it's a solid buy.

I added an old stove burner to the element below the float in case it should sit on the plastic when the water got low. This kind of improvement could easily be added by the manufacturer.

I had one like this for years and it worked great, but recently stopped working. I was happy to find this one, since I am already familiar with it and know how it works. The main thing to know it that it doesn't turn off when there's no water so it can overheat if you don't pay attention and if you put it in a plastic water bucket for the horses and let it sit empty, it will melt it before it overheats on you. If this one is like the last one I bought (so far so good) and you take care of it by maintaining the water level properly, it will last for years.

I used it to keep my pond with approx 40 fish in open to the air and keep a hole in the ice to enable the gases to escape. It works well but a longer power cable would have been nice. Alan

Decent product. As I use these to keep my house water storage tank from freezing in these super cold Alaska winters I replace them yearly, as an insurance. This year I added another simply because it had a longer cord, well that other brand failed causing the tank to ice up and these then failed as well. So back to just using this brand as that has been what worked well for me here in Fairbanks since 1996.My only complaint is that the cord is too short, I would gladly pay more for same product with longer cord.

First, the good news. This pond heater works and it works well. As I type this review, our house is under a foot of snow and the temperatures are just barely out of single digits. Still, our pond pump is burbling away, thanks entirely to this pond de-icer. Pond dimensions might help you in your consideration of this purchase. Ours is a small irregularly shaped pond (it shaped like italy or florida), around 700 to a thousand gallons. About 14 ft long by 3 feet wide and averages about 2.5 ft deep. None of the pond is frozen at the moment. The fish (YES! it is safe for fish!) are swimming, albeit slowly, but last year at this time they were frozen in place all winter and had to wait till spring to thaw and swim around again (yes, they all thawed and survived, but still...) The heater works as advertised and was a cinch to install, sort of... keep reading....Now for the bad news.... As other reviewers have pointed out, nowhere in the description does it mention that you cannot use this without the optional heater guard when using in a plastic or rubber pond. Our pond has a freeform PVC sheet (okay, don't get on me for this.... I am ignorant about materials and am just assuming its PVC but it might be something else) over a sand bottom and we needed to install the cage guard which meant that not only did it cost an additional 10 or 15 dollars, but, we couldn't use the heater right out of the box AND it also could have done damage to our pond (or so I am assuming) if we hadn't noticed that the cage was required. I just think that more people than not are going to need the guard so this deserves a big mention in the product description, OR, now here's a concept.... Why not include the cage guard with the product (since many of us will need it) and those who don't actually need it can sell theirs on the amazon marketplace to the rest of us when ours start to rust or become otherwise unusable.Overall, great product but I have my quibbles.
