They work without pre-drilling, but pre-drilling does make it easier. That aside, I also like the variety. I use these tech screws for fab work; great selection in the kit. Most of the fab stuff uses 3/4". I buy large quantities of the 3/4 for that reason. These are reasonably priced and great to have for varied jobs. We just bought a pool cover and reel for the cover. I used the 3/4" for fixing the length on the reel and they were great.
