Very useful kit that has made managing my starter a lot easier. I've tried making my own started from scratch previously to mixed results, so recently I purchased a starter from King Arthur Flour to hopefully be my last. This jar has helped me keep my little starter alive. My favorite part of this kit is the little spatula. This makes it so easy to get 113g out into my scale when feeding and also lets me scrape every last bit to be able to conserve the discard. I do wish there was a little more flexibility here, but the flexibility of silicone can cause breakage, so it's probably better to be thicker and less flexible. The jar itself has nice ounce markings which lets me see how much the starter has grown. The jar is glass and wide-mouthed so easy to clean. The wood lid has a plastic lining that is also able to be hand washed. The cover is stretchable and fits other jars as well, in case you need to have a levain or something. The kit also has a band to mark when you last fed the starter, as well as includes a temperature monitoring sticker. I haven't got much use out of this sticker as it doesn't seem to change for me--maybe I'm not using it right. The band also lets me mark where the starter started when fed.For the money I would recommend this. My started is happy and well fed thanks to this.

The size of the jar opening is much nicer. It's easier to clean. I think the rubber band is a little stupid. It has day one, day two, etc... labeled, but unless you turn that rubber band how would you know. It should have days of the week instead

I think they are the best, strong glass Jars with straight clean sides, and large opening. My hand can just fit. Did a lot of research these are close to perfect.

I'm so excited to try sourdough...again. I bough some starter once and it was like raising a child, so I had to give it up for adoption because I just couldn't do it. But I LOVE sourdough. I was raised on it in Alaska. My favorite breakfast place was called Sourdough Sam's in Fairbanks-- they had the best sourdough pancakes. If you haven't tried them, you should try whipping up a batch using this great little starter jar.I came to the realization that I have four cats who depend on me daily to feed them, so what was the problem with the sourdough being dependent, as well? So I'm going to try it again, but this time, I want to make my own starter. That's where this jar comes in. It looks like it's easy to use, well-made, decently thick (not afraid to drop it), and that little time tracker is a game-changer. I had no tracking system before and I was never sure when to feed it. Once a day? Several times a day? Once a week and so on. This little band on the jar helps keep me in check.I got the smaller jar (35oz) because I also sometimes jump head first into something unrealistically. This way, I wouldn't let it get out of hand and have too much starter, trying to find new homes for it, or feel guilty because there was so much in the fridge that I would get a bad case of fear-of-failure and give up entirely. The lid is really nice, I'm glad it's a natural material. The little cap they give you seems sturdy and will probably last a while. I don't know why you couldn't use cheesecloth or some other fabric if something happened to this one anyway. It all looks easy to clean, too. I'm pretty happy with. Now I just need to buy some yeast.

As a newbie to the world of homemade Sourdough bread from scratch, I have been viewing dozens of online videos, and while the common thread is "It's so simple," I find that they each have so many different techniques. This sourdough starter kit is excellent for someone like me, who hasn't got any of the equipment needed to start making their own starter. It is not necessary to buy a kit, but once you know what you will need to get started, if you do not already own the right sized jar, a thermometer, a silicone spoon/spatula and an elastic-edge cloth to drape over the jar to allow it to breathe, then you will ultimately go out and spend more on those items separately. In fact, when I was shopping for just the jar alone, they were about the same price as this kit, so for me it was an easy choice.I really like that the jar is clearly marked with measurements, and the elastic isn't just a household elastic band, but one that allows you to quickly note the days/times that you are feeding your starter. I really like that Acacia wood top that comes with the jar, and once my starter is healthy and can sit in the fridge for long distances in time between feedings/use, I will use that. The long, slim and firm design of the silicone spoon/spatula is useful for getting in and out of the jar opening, mixing the flour and water into the starter, scraping down the sides of the jar, and transporting it out and back in after usage, feedings and cleanings. My photos are over the course of the first week, and I did not get an explosive start to my starter like some people do in their videos, and you'll see that I have taken photos in different locations; I had moved it into a back bedroom that gets quite a bit warmer than the rest of the house. That did seem to boost it along, and now I have moved it back into my kitchen. I'm still just figuring it all out!
