With the 3M indoor window insulator kit, you can lower your heating bills during the winter and make your home more energy-efficient. Part of 3M's line of energy-saving products, this kit includes window insulation film and a roll of double-sided mounting tape to create an airtight seal. Stretching the film removes wrinkles for a transparent view. This version of the 3M indoor window insulator kit enables you to insulate five 3-foot-by-5-foot windows.

Keep the Heat In and the Cold Out
Made by 3M, this indoor window insulator kit contains window insulation film along with Scotch Window Film Tape to keep cold drafts out and warm air in. As a result, you can reduce your heating costs during the winter. The film shrinks tight around your window for a transparent, wrinkle-free fit and is made to reduce condensation and prevent frost build-up.

Double-Sided Mounting Tape for a Secure Seal
Included with this kit is a 1/2-inch-by-27-7/10-yard roll of 3M window film mounting tape to keep your insulation in place all season long. This double-sided tape seals off cracks and crevices, creates an airtight seal, and establishes a strong bond between the surface, the tape, and the insulation film, as recommended in ENERGY STAR's "Seal and Insulate" guidelines. Featuring a convenient, ready-to-peel liner, the tape adheres easily to a variety of surfaces and stays intact upon removal.

Simple, Fast Installation
Installing the window insulation is easy. You simply unfold the film and cut it to the width of the window, allowing an extra inch on all sides. Next, you firmly apply the mounting tape around the window frame and remove the paper liner. Then you apply the film to the tape, starting at the top of the window, and reposition and stretch the film to remove wrinkles. Finally, you use a blow dryer to remove any remaining wrinkles, then trim any excess film.

Made in the United States, and designed for indoor use only, this insulator kit can be used with aluminum, vinyl-clad, or painted or varnished wood molding, but it should not be applied to veneer paneling or Lauan mahogany molding. The film and tape should be removed from the window at the end of the season. The film measures 10 square yards, or 5.16 feet by 17.5 feet by 0.75 thousandths of an inch (H x W x D), and weighs 0.33 pounds.

I was skeptical but it seemed like a cheap and easy solution so it was worth a try. Our powder room is north facing and for the 7-8 years we lived in the house, I would rather go upstairs in the winter than use the close frigid cold washroom on the main level. It was FREEZING in there for half of the year (we keep the door closed because dogs). It took a few minutes to install this film and I can happily report, I can comfortably use the downstairs washroom this cold snowy Canadian winter. I wish I had measured the temperature before and after but it is a significant difference.Definitely worth a try.I will add it to other windows that aren't necessarily problematic but we can feel the cold when we open the blinds because I think it'll save us some energy use. My installation wasn't perfect but it was good enough to work.

The film is very thin and can easily get pierced by sharp object if not careful. Has to be installed at least an inch away from glass pane to be effective.

I have been using the 3M insulator kits every year for more than 20 years. At most I have had a few minor problems through the years, but would have rated the product at 5 stars. Everything changed this year. I ordered 6 of the patio door insulation kits. We have very tall windows and I have to use the patio door kits on them. When I went to install the double sided tape, half of the paper backing remained on the tape making it unusable. I opened the second kit and had the same problem. I returned all of the kits thinking perhaps I had received a bad "batch" of kits. Approximately two weeks later I reordered another six kits. I had the same problem with the tape. At this point I called 3M customer support. They were very apologetic and offered to send me six new rolls of tape. The tape I received was for exterior use, but came with a letter stating that they had identified a quality issue affecting the usability of the indoor double-sided tape. They said the outdoor tape could be used as a temporary replacement. I proceeded to install the kits on 3 of my windows and then ran out of time for the day. A few days later the plastic had come loose from the tape in various places on all 3 windows and was hanging down. Apparently the outdoor tape does not work with the indoor plastic or I received bad outdoor tape. I have given up this for this year. I don't even want to try another brand at this point. I have tried a cheaper brand in the past, and had problems with both the tape and visibility of the plastic. I certainly hope 3M gets things together and resolves these problems by next year.

This really works! I have an old 1940s home in Victoria with the old sash windows. You could feel the chill coming through them and our heater would run constantly throughout the day, never reaching 20 degrees. If I didn't put a timer on it, it would never turn off!I read a casestudy on this film via the Victoria Sustainability website and it said it does help reduce chill and retain some heat so I thought I'd give it a go. I'm glad I did.Installation is relatively easy. The tape is forgiving so you can pull off the film to restart as you install. I have shutters on the sash windows so the film is completely hidden on the inside, meaning I didn't have to be perfect when sticking the film down. From the outside, you can't even tell it's installed.note: the film doesn't go onto the window glass, it's supposed to stick on a frame, so there is a gap between it and the window glass, essentially acting like double glazing. You can immediately feel the difference. The chill from the windows are gone and my heater is actually stopping now because it reaches the thermostat temperature! I'm already saving money.I expected some effect, but it's surpassed my expectations.Highly recommended!

I cannot compare to any other year, as only been in this property this winter. I'd heard previous people had had high heating bills, so used this to add to my being efficient. I plan to leave it on all year, for as long as possible. I can comment on application. Yes, a bit of a fiddle, but, do the cutting as best you can,. I laid mine out on clean table, measured, dabbed blacker pen dots to guide my cut. When applying to window, I also carefully cut sticky tape to shape to pass by the window handle section. It worked. The film still adhered tightly. The hairdryer works brilliantly, I scoped the hotair to and fro over the film and stopped when it was taut, not over-taut. After a few weeks, the film attracts a very fine deposit from the atmosphere. Wipe with dry cloth. You really only see this if sun shines directly on it. I watch birds thru this filmed-over window, and it is nearly 100%clarity to look through with binoculars. 1.5 year later update: took it all off, it started to attract tiny black harvest flies behind it. I am impressed it did the job for far longer than I thought it would. A side bit of fun was - when a fly tries to get to the window glass it poings off the plastic like it is bouncing off a trampoline. My old stone house has been insulated now so I may not use this again.

I will never go another winter without putting these up.Last year we had an exterior window in the bedroom that needed to be replaced, it wouldn't quite close all the way. I didn't wanna pay to get someone to do it so I planned on DIY replacing the window in spring. Until that time, I duct taped the window as close as I could to it being closed then put one of this over the window. No more draft, happy wife.Pro's: Great tape; the cheapo versions of these come with cheap tape. This stuff is quality.Con's: Non I can think ofTips for Installing:1. The tape goes on TRIM all the way around the window, not on the window itself. The point is to create a barrier of air between your room air, and the glass.2. When applying the tape; tape ALL the way around the window. Then peel off the double sided film ONLY on the TOP of the window. If you don't do this on bigger windows you turn it into a 2 man job to prevent it from blowing around and sticking to the sides of the window.** I recommend finding the middle of the plastic, and sticking it to the tape at the middle of the window. Then go from the middle to the edge on both sides.3. When the top is done, I follow suit with the bottom in the same fashion, and then the sides. It does not have to be perfectly tight ... and doesn't have to be wrinkle free. The stuff really stretches quite tight.4. I use the hair dryer all the way around the edge to get creases out ... then go into the middle.P.S.I had left over; and have a part time heated garage. This stuff really helps in not frosting up the garage window when i pour heat into it.

(UPDATE: Spring 2012 and I've taken off the sheets so that I could open the windows. No paint peeled off the windows. It may be BECAUSE they were well- and newly-painted. I could see how it might take the paint off if the paint it already cracked or otherwise compromised. I am very pleased with this product. I will be buying again for the coming California "winter".)We live in a 1920's bungalow and recently upgraded all but two rooms with dual-paned windows. The two are the living and dining rooms, each with original single-paned windows. It doesn't get that cold here in Oakland, but cold enough in the winter that I continued to battle condensation on the inside of the windows in these rooms. I tried different curtains, experimented with air circulation, looked at dewpoint calculators to try and mitigate condensation. Yet, each morning I woke up with 9 wet windows that I'd have to wipe down. After reading many, MANY reviews, and after a recommendation from a co-worker in Atlanta who has a similarly-aged house and windows and swears by these, I decided to try this product. Let me tell you: This stuff works. Except for one window--the top half of one single-hung window where I know it's due to "user error" since I didn't install one corner perfectly sealed--I have had NO condensation on any of the windows since installation in early December, and we have had all manner of weather since then. Hooray! I could not be more pleased with this product.I completed all 9 windows in about 2 hours (6 large windows - 1 large picture window in each room, each flanked by single-hung windows; plus 3 small picture windows).Just follow the instructions. A complete seal is key. From inside the house, they are virtually invisible if you start with fairly taut sheets when you put them up, then take the time to apply extra heat on any remaining creases. I just used my hair dryer, switching to high to work the creases. From the street, they are also hardly noticeable unless you look for them or the sunlight catches the plastic, but it's not bad.My only worry now, given some of the reviews I read, is the paint peeling off the window frames when (and if) I take the plastic off in the spring. We just had the rooms and windows painted last year. 3M adhesives are great, but sometimes TOO good for older homes.
