I wanted to try out some emergency food options for my camping trips, and I came across this vegan fried rice. It seemed like a solid choice since it lasts for ten years, which gives me peace of mind knowing I have food ready for any situation. When I finally prepared it, I was pleasantly surprised by how easy it was to cook. Just add water and heat it up. The taste was decent, especially for freeze-dried food. It wasn't gourmet, but it did the job and was filling. On the downside, I found that the texture was a bit off compared to fresh fried rice. Also, while it’s convenient, it’s not something I would want to eat daily since it lacks flavor depth. If I was stuck with this as my only food option for days, I might get tired of it.Pros:- Quick and easy preparation- Filling and satisfyingCons:- Texture isn’t as good as fresh food- Lacks flavor depth

This pull tab, well sealed 5" x 4" can of vegan fried rice has a very pleasant taste. I like that it does not have alot of preservatives (only maltodextrin) but still has a 10 year shelf life. The can is a bit large for backpacking, but it is the perfect size if you wanted to make the rice in the can. The ingredients of the package are...RiceBell peppersZucchiniGreen peasCornCarrotsEdamameSoy proteinSoy saucePotato starchMushroom seasoningMaltodextrinSaltThe contents of the package when mixed with water makes about 2 cups of fried rice. This can of fried rice provides 490 calories. The flavor and texture was what I get when I order fried rice from a restaurant (note: the ingredients were packaged 3 months prior to trying).

I will be honest, I have absolutely no idea how this can of BH-500 vegan fried rice mix for emergency use with a 10 year shelf life from brand BLACK HEED LLC tastes. And that is because... that is not the actual point of ordering a can of emergency rationed food like this. The point... it to have this item in case of a survival emergency, so I am trusting that whether it tastes good or not, it will do the job of providing me with protein and nourishment when the scenario someday occurs within the next 10 years, that I require it.For what it offers, a 10 year shelf life, and a can to cook it in over an open burner or fire someday, I give this 5 stars.

This is the first time I have actually come across MRE, so I'm not an expert by any means. I have done a little more research into them. This has shaped my experience somewhat with this MRE. First of all, the way it is sold in canister, as a single serving, doesn't seem like the best option. Whether camping or preparing for the apocalypse, (or any other emergency LOL) it seems pretty likely you'd need more than one serving. In this format, they do take up more space than having it prepared in bulk. I do appreciate that it can be prepared/served in the canister.Flavour/texture wise, I'm typically pretty sensitive, and on the picky side. I found this palatable. Would I eat it every day? Probably not, but, not what it's intended for. Overall it doesn't seem like the most sustainable option, especially at 11.50$ (at time of review) for a single serving.

I decided to try one out. It's just an odd sized can with a single portion of rice and beans! So the can is too large for what it holds. I have a space problem, so I find these cans aren't as effective as #10 cans or individual meals in Mylar pouches! Can't comment on the taste yet, I haven't tried one yet. I guess if you have space to fill, try them. If you're like me, don't waste the space.

I think that MREs are actually fun, so I ordered the Black Heed LLC - BH-500 Vegan Fried Rice to try. It has a shelf life of 10 years, but I was pretty sure I was going to eat it quickly. The canister was actually difficult to open. It's a larger can with a pop top lid, so I expected to have no difficulty in removing it. However, I pulled the pop top as instructed and the lid got stuck several times as I was opening it; it wasn't a dealbreaker, but it was perplexing. The Vegan Fried Rice itself was sealed in a vacuum-sterilized aluminum foil packet inside the can, and the can is filled with nitrogen. The directions advised to add 250ml (1 cup/8 fl oz) of boiling water to the can (containing the fried rice) and stir occasionally. There are alternate directions provided if you do not have boiling water. I added boiling water and stirred occasionally. After 10 minutes, I checked it. The rice was dense and most of the vegetables were hydrated; the peas were the notable exception, and I did not like the texture as they did not seem to hydrate properly. There was not much flavor, so I added some seasoning from my home. For a camping or emergency product, this MRE is tasty. There is definitely a lack of vegan-friendly camping food, and this helps to fill that gap. It was also sufficient for one person for a light lunch, although I find myself fairly hungry afterward. It will absolutely benefit from some seasoning, even a to-go packet of soy sauce. The can itself is large and may not pack easily in a backpack. It also a pricier option at almost $9 for 490 calories/1 serving.

Went into this knowing this is an MRE, so quality might be iffy. Given that, it wasn't bad - not a gourmet meal, but better than Panda Express, if that is a means of measurement. Eating the entire packet was not a problem. What you get is a container the size of a quart of paint, with a sealed foil package of food. The problem were the instructions, which was to add boiling water and let sit for 10 minutes. My previous experience with MRE's is to keep the package sealed and while heating. That was not the case here. Ten minutes later, opened the foil package to find a bunch of warm raw rice.......So tried again, adding the water directly to the food, and it cooked up fine.Second issue was that there is no indication if the outer container is food safe. Ie, was it expected to dump the contents of the foil package into the can and then add hot water? Or add hot water directly to the foil? Did I mention the can itself looks about the size of a quart of paint? When adding hot water directly to the can, it expanded and deformed a bit. It did not split a seal, but maybe the water is supposed to be added just to the foil packet.......I suppose if I had to live off these for six months, I would figure out tricks like that real quick. But it would be nice to have plain, clear directions.

2812510 year shelf life!BH-500 Emergency Food/Survival food/MRE/Camping & hiking food (Vegan Tomato Pasta)Brand: BLACK HEED LLC$8.50 Asin B0DNWQXQF8Obviously I cannot test the shelf life but I’m happy to see vegan options offered for MREs. I chose the tomato pasta can and it is good. I added about 2 cups of boiling water and waited 10 minutes, stirring occasionally and had a nice bowl of soup. There is a LOT of pasta in it and I’d like to have seen some beans or lentils added in place of some to bump up the fiber and protein; currently fiber is 5 grams and protein is 11 grams. The can is a single serving. It is a vacuum sealed bag inside a can. Getting the bag out of the can took some work; I had to squeeze the can a few times and wriggle the bag a bit. They could use a more rounded and smaller bag so it would remove easily. Otherwise this is a good product. There are no junk ingredients, has a 10 year shelf life, the taste is good, and it’s an American company (in Wyoming). Their website has more items and you’ll get more with your budget there.
