I have a few different reasons I ordered this tachometer, but mainly it's so dial in my feeds and speeds when metal working. My lathe is an older and smaller unit that has no tech on it so you have to rely on speed charts to figure out what gear and pulley setup you need. Even with that chart, my gut told me the RPMs were off from that chart. So when I received this tachometer, I installed the batteries, stuck some reflective tape on the lathe's chuck and took my first measurement. This tachometer reported 873 RPM while the speed chart told me I should have been running right at 1000 RPM. So I believe this is an accurate measurement as it confirms my suspicion that it was running slow. Might have a tired motor on my hands...All was great and I thought I was done with the test until I tried to turn the unit off. Upon pushing the power button, the tachometer turns off for about 5 seconds, then automatically turns itself back on again. You can repeat this process ad nauseum but without fail, it comes back on. I had to remove the batteries to actually turn it off so I think I have a bad unit. I requested a replacement and will update if the same problem persists with this new one or if I got a bad apple..UPDATE: I received the replacement unit and the turn on ghost did not come with this one. The unit functions as expected. I tried it on a number of different power tools and it seems to be reading accurately and working as designed. The only reason I'm still giving only 4 stars is the pickup can be a bit fiddly. The instructions tell you that it can read as close 2" or as far as 20". I have not been able to get an accurate reading any closer than about 4". If I get closer, it seems to get confused and will show an RPM 5 or 6 times what it actually is. On the other end of things, I cannot get an accurate reading (or a reading at all) if I'm farther out than about 8". So they claim it works from 2-20" range, I'd say it's more accurately like 3-10" range. For my use, this still works just fine but be aware if you had a specific setup to fit this into.

This is a great little tachometer. It’s very compact, and simple to operate (though I did need to read the manual to figure out that you need to long-press the power button after turning it on to turn on the measurement laser). You can cycle through max, min, and last measurement conducted per session (e.g. before turning it off, in which it forgets everything). It seems pretty accurate at the low speeds I can verify, so I assume it’s accurate enough throughout its full range. My fan apparently spins at about 5300 rpm!I’ll admit, it took me a minute to figure out how to install the batteries (which were included, thank you). The tachometer is in a rubberized orange case that it can be removed from to access the battery compartment. I didn’t quite realize this orange case was removable, and the instructions didn’t mention it. Also, the laser wavelength is not listed anywhere, but I assume it’s a standard 650nm red diode laser, but it doesn’t have a standard laser safety sticker, as it should. The instructions only state that it’s a class 3. The beam itself is not a dot, but more of a half-moon shape, as if the focus is messed up. However, it seems to work fine anyway, so I’m not docking any stars. This gets a full 5 stars.

I kept trying to figure out why the batteries were dead everytime I went to use the product. Turns out the power button is defective. When you hit the power button the device turns off for about 5 seconds and then turns back on. Totally defective, I went through several sets of batteries before realizing what the issue was. I returned the original order and requested a replacement. The replacement just arrived and it has the same defect. Maybe it’s a bad batch but I think I’m done with this product. I would not recommend.
