I bought this food mill based on recommendations from various cooking sites to replace a smaller one that was taking quite a bit of time to use. I was making large quantities of apple sauce in the fall as we had an abundant crop in the fall. The recommendations are right: this mill does process larger quantities very quickly. BUT, as others have said, the circular mechanism is too close to the "teeth" in the bottom disk. Not only is there a metal-against-metal scraping sound when using the mill, but also too much of the peel gets ground up. If the peel were ground totally fine, that would be ok. Instead, the apple sauce has "millions" of tiny bits of peel, making it unappetizing. So I then have to run the apples through a second mill to remove those. By the time I do that, I might a well have used the less efficient mill in the first place.Messages to the company for a fix when unanswered and I do not see a way to adjust the spring to raise the circular mechanism just a bit.

Similar to a number of other reviews, this item looks poorly made for the price tag and won't turn due to defective fittings/shape. The turning blade looks like it was not engineered precisely and got stuck on the mesh plate. The mesh plate itself looks like holes were punched in it with gritty irregular surface. There was some traces of rust on it too which made me wonder what kind of metal it was made from.Altogether the quality is really low and the one I received was defective.

I so much wanted this item to work. I had researched and read all the reviews. Thought the few poor reviews I read certainly wouldn't be the case with my experience... it was. For being the highest price of all of the mid-range food mills, I am so incredibly disappointed. First, it came with no instructions at all. Seemed like it would be a no-brainer - 10 minutes of struggle and a couple cuts, I was able to assemble. It would barely turn at all. Had to rotate the bowl then pull on the handle to get it to go another couple inches around.Next issue, the sides of the bowl's metal had a strange dirty type smudges/film to it that would not wipe off. Like residue from the chemicals used on the final metal's wash in production? Like I said, I so wanted for this to work and get to be like all the other happy reviewers... am so sad to have to send it back. Buying the next highest rated one (and much cheaper), OXO Good Grips Food Mill.

Of all the sub 200 dollar food mills this one appeared to be the best. It does not perform like the paderno i used at one of my jobs. That was the full size paderno btw not the one they offer that looks like this. It is on the plus side a good bit smaller which is better for my home. construction is nice. the side wall are thin. You can see the impression left by rivets in the metal. this is the case with all of these Ive seen. It doesn't seem to want to bend and it's light weight again helps for home use. Again tho it isn't as good a performer. they all require a lot of turns and a little manual help pushing things around but this one is more work. I mean there is a techniques with every food item and every tool and im still getting a feel for it but the paderno was the first one i ever used and it would tear through mashed potatoes better than anything I've ever seen. I'm not one to sacrifice function for space saving convenience so knowing what i know if having to replace the item I'm going for a paderno. However it does do the job and judging by the build it probably will for some time.

This item is a little pricey for what you get. Also, the pallet that crushes the food into the holes may need to be adjusted before it works properly. For the price they charge for this gizmo, it should work better.

Not everyone would have use for this food mill due to today's busy lifestyle, but for those of us who maybe have a tomato garden each year, or who like to make their own soups, and sauces- this mill is invaluable in separating skins and seeds from pulp. Now I'm making delicious, authentic, enchilada sauces using dried peppers, creating the smoothest, seedless tomato sauces, not to mention getting all the goodness out of freshly picked berries to make syrup, jelly's or seedless jams. I'm sure there's a lot more things I can do with it, too.I've used this mill for over a year now and it's raised the bar on the quality of my cooking tremendously. Homemade stuff takes longer but tastes so much better and I find myself using it more and more as time goes by - So if you have the time for homecooking and preserving, I highly recommend this product. It's well made, easy to clean, and does a fantastic job. Maybe it's not the right choice for everyone; after all, not everyone has the time or skill to cook - but it's perfect for those of us who do. It gives awesome results so I give 5 stars.

I am only speaking to those people out there that know what this is used for and have used them in the past. Alright you know what this is and you need one. This is the one too get. The size is large and the quality is excellent. What else could you want? You will need a pot to rest it on when you are ready to strain your Tomatoes and that is it. Remember that this large. That is a good thing. I have another one I purchased. I believe it is OXO Grip?? That is way too small to be useful. This one a bigger and much more useful for straining large amounts of Tomatoes etc. Good Luck..
