The shape and weight make it ideal for the car. And the cups holders are very convenient. It works very well as a cooler but the frigid aire only works if you 1. Will be in the car all day and keep it running consistently or 2. Pre chill the itemsIt fits a days food or drinks for a week.

In response to concerns voiced by other buyers re: overheating of the plug and wires, I did two things. First I purchased a separate cigarette outlet plug that appeared likely to be more robust than the original. I shortened the long (inadequate gauge) extension wire and attached the new plug. Used the unit daily on three-week road trip. Plug never overheated or melted. No problem with shorter (small gauge) extension wire either. When I initially plugged the modified unit in, there was a sharp "crack" sound and a puff of smoke form the fan outlet on the front of the unit. Don't know what that was from. On chance that it was a polarity issue, I reversed the wires and the unit worked -- albeit with two issues. First, the switch direction was reversed: heat cooled and cold heated! Easily accommodated. And the light did not function. Both could be attributable to an initial polarity issue (cracking sound and smoke), but they did not appear to affect the rest of the unit's operation. We pre-cooled our drinks and other items and used small pre-frozen freezer bags designed for use in coolers to help keep items cold. We also kept the unit cool overnight by periodically turning it on using an AC adapter and running for several hour periods (but not continuously). Ran continuously more or less for 6-8 hours in the car. Kept things colder than an insulated cooler would.Satisfied that "safety" concerns can be addressed. But recommend attention to polarity issue if you switch to a new plug.Hopefully Wagan will improve the quality of its plug and use heavier gauge wire in its extension cord to avoid the need for the modifications I made.

Right off the bat, the unit cannot really cool anything down. Rather, it will keep things that are already cold, cold (and by cold meaning 10 degrees below ambient).BUT if you prep properly, it DOES work better than nothing at all. Chill your drinks in a regular fridge, and stick a couple of ice packs (which means you can mayyyybe fit 3 or 4 small bottles (700ml) then as long as it's powered, it will keep them cold all day (an 8hr timeframe lets say).Points off for no start up protection. You are supposed to power it off before starting your car, or it can fry circuitry. I've been very careful to keep it in mind, but I've already done it once. Seems to still be ok, but that's extra worry you shouldn't have.

EXCELLENT QUALITY, GREAT CONSTRUCTION. This cooler is perfect for small amounts of drinks, food, or other vegetables/snacks for short or long day-trips. We just used it for the first time, alternating between 12V power in the car for 3-4 hours at a time and AC household current (using the optional converter) throughout the day as we traveled, stopping for short family/friends visits. Everything stayed COLD all day and early evening; and outdoor AZ temp was as high as 110 degrees that day. Size is perfect for the purpose we intended. If you want to carry larger amounts, buy the larger cooler that Wagan makes. Saw the negative comments about cooling capability. Mostly bogus, in my opinion. Don't give this product a bum rap just because you don't know how to treat it properly. It's not a freezer! Be smart. Use the converter and "pre-cool" the Wagan cooler for an hour in your home before moving it to your car. Add one or two ice-packs from your refrigerator's freezer. Put only drinks and food items in it that you have already pre-cooled in your refrigerator. Set the cooler on the floor of your vehicle away from the sun, preferably near rear A/C vents from your console, if you have that. Keep good air-flow around the cooler. PAY ATTENTION TO THE WARNINGS in the owners manual. Turn off the cooler and unplug it before you turn on or turn off your vehicle's engine. THE MANUAL ACTUALLY TELLS YOU TO DO THAT. Read and heed. Why would you thinks it's okay to leave it plugged in and switched on every time you cycle your engine on and off??? Also saw the claims about wires or connectors overheating. Again, bogus. Don't leave the wires for either the 12V connector or the converter coiled up and secured with the little plastic wire twist-fasteners. If you do that, you are creating a heating coil when current runs through the wire and, of course, it's going to heat up! Keep all wires laying loose. Again, just be smart. USED INTELLIGENTLY, THIS IS AN OUTSTANDING PRODUCT. No hesitation in giving it our highest recommendation. (Full disclosure: We have not tried the heating function, didn't buy it for that purpose, so offer no evaluation of the product used in that mode.)
