For occasional use it’s just fine and will probably last as long as you need.

Cleaning threads on head bolts from a 1948 pontiac. 30 bolts that haven't moved in 75 years, with rust and carbon build-up.

These came as a set of two. Both dies are marked as 5-40 but I think one of them is actually a 4-40 threading die. It would not start cutting a thread on a .124 dia. rod. (.124 is the nominal major diameter for external 5-40 threads) I checked the die with a good 5-40 screw and the die would not start. I then checked a 4-40 screw and it threaded snugly into the die and cleaned up the thread. Go figure. As for the other correctly marked die, it did cut threads but they ended up tapered like a pipe thread. I used plenty of cutting oil and did advance the die very gingerly as the material I was threading was stainless. I was probably asking too much of an import re-threading die. If you need any precision, spend a bit more and get a U.S. made adjustable threading die.

The outer diameter of the die is tool small for any of my die holders. The outer diameter of the die is so small it seems like it was intended to be in a child’s tool set for cutting threads on plastic rods.
