I like this thickness gauge. It has a nice-looking and very intuitive graphical interface, and despite having only six buttons, it's relatively easy to navigate through the menus and change settings. There are even helpful hints displayed at the bottom of certain screens to indicate button functions. The meter is easy to use and has a number of useful features, including storage of readings and analysis of results in the form of a graph, along with a settable high-low thickness limit alarm. However, it should be noted that there seems to be no USB connectivity to a PC, so any stored readings would have to be transferred manually. I like that the batteries are rechargeable, and the unit comes with a nice case and a small bottle to hold the liquid interface medium for making measurements. It's very convenient that the steel calibration disk is built right into the front of the meter, so it can readily be recalibrated at any time. I believe the biggest downside of this gauge is that the accuracy of the measurements depends directly on the accuracy of the sound velocity entered for the material you're measuring the thickness of, and this is not always easy to determine. Looking up the velocity for a material online often gives you a range that can vary 2-to-1 or more, depending on the material. There are a number of common materials in the selection table built into the meter, and you can change the velocity value for any of the entries, but there are only three slots labeled as custom materials. A minor annoyance is that whenever you select a different material, you have to press "ok" twice, since it first gives you the option to change the value every time, even for the standard materials. Comparing results with my calipers, the meter appears to be about 3-5% accurate for standard materials like steel, but it does not appear to work at all for "soft" materials like cardboard, wood or other substances which tend to absorb sound, as you might expect. This instrument will be most useful for measuring the thickness of homogenous materials in configurations that won't allow convenient access to one side of the surface. However, if you want highly accurate readings, I would suggest first taking baseline measurements with the material you plan to measure using a sample of known thickness, if possible, so you can determine an appropriate value for sound velocity.

I ordered this device with the idea could use it to determine how far I would need to drill through multiple materials stacked on top of each other (think a metal skinned door). It could only tell me how thick the skin was but that was pretty impressive because it was spot on, very accurate compared to my manual measurements. You do need some kind of conductive liquid to make it work. In my testing, I used both saliva and water. I imagine that any sort of conductive liquid would work for this purpose. Overall, it's a nice tool and I would recommend it. It's well built and feels high quality.

What can I say about this toy. Did I really need it? No. Could I resist when I saw it? Also no.There's a steep learning curve for this device, and reading the manual is a must. One that's out of the way... read it again.Figure out what the speed of sound is in your specific material, and enter that in a custom setting. Dab gel on the calibration plate and calibrate to the manual (remember the thing I told you to read? Twice?). Then dab some ultrasound gel on the object to be measure, pretty the probe HARD against the object, and in a few seconds, I get a reading claiming to be more precise than my calipers. Is it really? [shrug] Hard to say. I can't measure that precisely. Let's say "yes".There are other functions for analysis, memory, etc.I'm giving this four stars. If you really need it, like you're sounding pressure vessels, it may be fine. I'm just playing with neat toys. And this is certainly a neat toy!Photo shows it against the measurement I get from my calipers (that don't have that precision). Close enough for government work!
