I bought these to carry my canoe on my new Subaru outback. They mounted easily to the Subaru crossbars and, on a 600 mile round-trip, worked great. I used a tie down strap on each bar but no bow or stern tie down and I had no issues, even in a strong quartering wind. They were a bit costly, in my opinion, but work great and I am very happy with them.

Easy fit and adjustment for footpads. Holds canoe securely. Only disappointment was the rope end straps that aren’t intuitive or easy to use - of no real value to me. Otherwise would have given 5 stars.

Added to my Kayak-itty-Yak canoe carrier trailer and they work like a charm to help keep my canoe firmly in place.

I absolutely love how small yet secure this product is and the ingeniously easy way to install them onto your roof racks. Plus it comes with all tie down straps you need (including bow and stern straps). To use it on a Toyota FJ Cruiser, you’ll need to first reposition one of the stock cross beams but this is easy because they are designed to be adjusted as necessary. Great product!!

Easy to put on roof bars and they clamp down reassuringly tightly. Holds the canoe tightly, and supplied straps work well. Tie downs for front/stern cleverly designed and easy to use. Worth the cost if you're transporting a canoe long distance, way more stable than the old foam blocks. Overall a great product.

What’s not to like about this canoe carrier. I use this on my 119 Sportsman Discovery. Have used this for travels up 1k miles one way and back. You can easily use the supplied bow and stern rope, but I use Powertye tie downs, with Le Kapmoz hood loops. More secure and heavy duty.I usually stop at every refuel and adjust them just to be safe. Tbh the canoe isn’t going nowhere, if I didn’t even bother to check. Up to 80mph I have no issues, with my set up. Buy this over any of its competitors.

This design would fit almost any carrier made. Very high quality materials. A little easier to mount and remove than many other accessories. Holds canoe extremely steady, even in strong cross winds. Comes with straps and bow and stern tie downs.

This canoe carrier kit is an all-in-one, universal solution for mounting canoes to roof racks. Installation is simple — once the canoe is on the roof rack, place the four bases under the gunwales of the canoe, and then screw them down to the roof rack. The included straps loop over the bottom of the canoe and are easily tightened. The strap buckles have rubber bumpers to keep the buckles from scratching the vehicle and canoe. The ropes for securing the end of the canoe to the front and back of the vehicle have an easy-to-use ratcheting mechanism that makes it a cinch to tighten. Each component of the kit is thoughtfully constructed and feels durable. Once all the components are tightened down, the canoe doesn't move whatsoever during transport, even at interstate speeds. One tip: if your vehicle doesn't have mounting points at the front and rear of the vehicle, you'll need to get some of the loop straps that fit under the hood and trunk/hatch of your vehicle. Thule makes some in a blue color that matches the ropes that come in this kit. I have a black car so I elected to get a different brand (at about half the price) that offered the straps in black.Another tip: unlike many other Thule products, there are no locks on the bases or straps that come with this kit. I remove the hardware and reinstall each time I mount the canoe. That's probably a function of the universality of the kit. However, I'd prefer a base that mounts and locks to Thule's bars so I wouldn't have to reinstall for each use, as it often takes some adjustment to get the canoe lined up straight. Furthermore, Thule sells locking straps, and at this price point I would expect the locking straps to come with the product. This is the reason I'm giving 4 stars instead of 5.As with lots of Thule products, the cost of the kit is pretty steep, but having everything in a single kit is nice. Plus, the ratcheting tie-down ropes were a pleasant surprise. This isn't a value buy, but I shouldn't have to make any similar purchases for a long time.

This works well, but is overpriced in my opinion. Definitely good quality, but it's just a platform to hold my canoe. I don't know how they justify the high price tag. Maybe because it's Thule. It does a great job of holding my canoe to my 2014 Nissan Pathfinder. It has rounded roof racks, which causes my canoe to slide to the side. This product fixes that issue. It also comes with some locking pulley's, rope, and nylon ribbon cable. The rope is too short to be useful. Two of the smaller ribbons, seem useless. I can't figure out what they are for. The third, larger ribbon cable is likely for tying down the middle. I don't use any of these cables. I bought my own rope, which fits the pulley's, and some locking carabiners. I now have one carabiner, one locking pulley, and one rope on each end to secure the canoe. This is working very well with the mounting brackets. The rest of the stuff is a waste of money.Glad I bought it, but definitely over priced.

Works great! Not really a completely necessary part for canoe portage but great added peace of mind. Eliminates any side to side movement of the canoe but if you secure your canoe to the roof racks you shouldn't have any movement.Had a minor problem with the threads in one of the parts but Thule sent a replacement. great customer service good instructions Good quality parts even the ropes and straps are well made. They do work better with the flat cross bars (mine are the rounded aero style) but still fit. If you haven't got your cross bars yet get the flat ones. The aero ones make a weird noise. Very happy with this purchase.

Put this on a 2011 jeep compass that I had bought crossbars for (roof rack) and use it to tie down a 15' canoe. This is what you're looking for if you want to tie a canoe to the top of your SUV. Holds it down perfectly and was easy to figure out with very good instructions. Someone was thinking when they made this product. It costs more than a piece of rope and a couple pieces of foam for a reason. First time I used it had to feed the blue rope thru the ratchets and figure out what goes where but it's not hard. After that it's so convenient to use again. Clamps take seconds to install or remove and have a non slip pad for canoe to rest on. Very glad I bought this! I wanted easy and secure and that's what I got. I also discovered that Thule is a trusted name in this kind of stuff for your car with pieces that are made to fit right.

I towed my 2012 Ford Flex with my Old Town Canoe 169 behind my 40 foot RV for 150 miles. During the drive, there was a 25 mph wind from the right side of the vehicles. I stopped after 75 miles and had to tighten the right forward 819 Portage canoe bracket. It came loose in the wind. I drove the car back to our ranch and the canoe stayed secure. I found that I had to have the center of the canoe in the middle of the two roof racks. We left our ranch for our Maryland home and towed the car and canoe 2,763 miles back home. During our travel through Wyoming, an electric sign warned "Do not tow any light trailers along Interstate 80, because for the next 50 miles, there are winds from the South at 50 mph with gusts over that". After the 50 miles, of intense driving through the wind, I stopped and again had to tighten the forward right bracket because it moved an inch to the right because of the wind. A few miles later, another sign read, "severe winds over 50 mph for the next 75 miles, do not tow any light trailers". The winds were coming from the high Colorado mountains over the high plains in Wyoming. The canoe made it through the next 75 miles and never budged. We drove the rest of the way home and I checked the canoe security at every stop. It rode beautifully and I am impressed with both the Thule 819 Portage Canoe Carrier and the Thule Roof Rack. Don B
