I don't find the rails are necessary. You can store the skis securely without them. If anything, the rails take up unnecessary space. If your cargo cage has a felt liner i would say it's completely unnecessary unless you absolutely wanted it. And storage space would be jeopardized. I'm just waiting for them to release the felt liner for the three motion, so I can buy one. I sent my rails back once. I realized how much space they took up.
