These things need a lot of work to get to use. Not that I minded, but damn! First: you will need to use coarse salt and Jasmine rice to season it over a period of a few half hours. Secondly: You will need to make sure to check all the powdered rice flour you make to not have any volcanic rock fragments in it, anymore. Lastly: You will have to make sure all of the interior of the Molcajete is as smooth as you can get it. Is it worth it? OH HELL YES! It is time well spent! DO NOT use liquid soap at the start! Soap can get caught in the molcajete and affect the taste of the food in terrible ways. If you use soap, all your food will taste soapy, and no one wants that! The surface is porous and will absorb that crap! Might as well put your cast iron pots and pans in the dishwasher.Lastly use a combo of rock salt, Cilantro, Cumin seed, garlic cloves, and habaneros to the bowl and mash them and let them rest and cook them to retain flavors in the molcajete. Later, rinse them out. Trust me! the porous stone will hold on to these flavors and add to the salsas you make in it! OMG! Do this only once and you will have awesome game night meals forever! It's work that will pay off in the long run! Enjoy. AVOID THE SOAP!

I have always wanted an authentic molcajete and was thrilled to find this one. The price is great for how sturdy and large this bowl is. This came with a Tortilla pouch, curing guide and cookbook that had good recipes so well worth the time it took to get it ready for use.

Took my husband a few days to get it properly seasoned - his arms got some more definition during then lol But he loves it! Makes some amazing guac and for his spices and seasonings for his hot sauce & paste hobby. He did a ton of rice grinding, then garlic grinding and whatnot to get it seasoned. He takes such great care of it too and doesn’t allow me to even use it or wash it lol

After a few rounds of grinding rice to season the molcajete it’s still leaking water. After reading up on it that is a sign of a stone cutter that’s inexperienced or not interested in making a quality product. I’m going to keep trying to grind in enough rice to make it stop leaking but I’ve made a bad purchase and I know it. Don’t buy from this company.
