The 1mm snap line is incredibly bold and precise, making marking tasks easy. The five-gear quick retrieval is a real time-saver.

It's just a chalk line, but far better than the 30 year old one I've been using. Clearly made by folks who iterate over the details until things are pretty much perfect. I bought the 1 mm black unit; the lines are quite visible on green concrete. The chalk is quite persistent, so lines aren't so easily scuffed away.

I been using Tajima chalk box for years now for rough carpentry. It's one of the best and crisp lines out there. Definitely worth the price.

After switching from a simple Dewalt chalkline to this one I immediately noticed many differences. For one, the Dewalt chalkline was a lot fatter despite this chalkline being the extra bold version, but has a very weak line that would snap with little tension. This Tajima line however is a lot stronger, and the line produced makes it very easy to keep your work straight as an arrow.I spanned 26ish feet across rafters and with the amount of tension I was able to apply the line only sagged 1/16th of an inch over that distance. I’ve also dropped it twice now from 20 feet up and couldn’t even tell that I had dropped it in the first place. The wind up system also seems very durable without any skipping at fast speeds. Also have to point out that the hook is somewhat sharp allowing you to hook into material with ease, but one of the greatest features I love and use constantly is being able to lock the line, pull it tighter AND push the tip of the chalkline down like a pen in order to get very accurate one handed line without getting covered in chalk.I promise you, get this line and you won’t get another brand ever again. The king of chalklines.

Bit expensive compared to run of the mill chalk lines but really good quality line time will tell

I love the quality of this chalk line, it's solid and it fits comfortably in my hand. The folding arm is nice too. It leaves a solid, clean, vibrant line when using Tajima's brand of fine chalk. The lock is a nice feature, holds the line in so it doesn't get tangled or leave chalk in your bags. One thing I've notice after 3 months of daily use that might be helpful to a new user: If I pull the line tight like with standard chalk lines, it leaves a line that isn't as clean or completely solid. If I just put a little tension on it and snap it about a couple inches off the surface, it leaves a super clean, solid line. Only thing I don't like is how much chalk it dumps out when pulling the line out. Maybe I overfilled it, but it's had 3 months of use and still dumps out a ton of chalk.

We're off to a good start. Can't speak to long-term durability yet but various annoyances with the usual chalk lines have already been bypassed.* It's not clearly mentioned in the marketing materials and many folks won't read the fine print, so be aware that you don't want to use extreme tension with this line, or it could break. That said, it's designed to not need as much tension and yet produce a quality line.- Form factor is easier to have on me. The shape (and hook-stay and handle and so on) works into my rig better than other small boxes, and unlike those, the braided line seems so far good enough to cover for the giant irwin industrial chalk-rope that I sometimes had to fall back on (which doesn't really fit at all).- Winding and unwinding so far going well. The little scroll lock does seem to work, but it doesn't have a lot of surface area or a satisfying click to convince me it's really going to hold when tested repeatedly and with vigor. The gear drive does make a noticeable difference on the job, and feels pretty solid.- Filling it is FAR easier than any other chalk box I've dealt with. Just FYI, fill it only to the bottom of the pin (you'll see when you open it), and don't pack the chalk (might be obvious to more experienced folks but worth noting). Some might be concerned about capacity but aside from thinking it's plenty for most jobs, I also think ease of refilling would make up for the difference (if any - depends on what you're using currently).- I shouldn't need to for a long time, but I checked out the process for repair and replacement of the line and it's straight-forward (pun entirely intended).- Works with Tajima micro-chalk (purchased separately). Came with a sample of their snap dye which I have not used yet (concerned it's too permanent for my circumstances, but nice to know it's an option). Will work with standard chalk brands, but supposedly not as well. I have no idea how much of that is marketing nonsense versus real factors like grain and density. If/when I find out I'll update this. The first day I used it, I ended up with several other folks standing around admiring the beauty of the chalk line. Of course, that could have just been because they didn't want to go back to work, but I'm choosing to believe my Tajima has magic powers. Using it again tomorrow, so we'll see if writing this review causes the whole thing to fall apart. When it arrived the packaging (of the product itself, not the shipping box) was in terrible shape and appeared to have been ripped apart and put back together again (barely). That concerned me (I bought a NEW item), but since I couldn't find any visible problem with the device itself and wanted to go ahead and use it, I decided to ignore that. Hopefully it's a one-time anomaly having nothing to do with the product.

As a saw cutter I rely on a chalk line for the vast majority of my concrete cutting. I've used just about every chalk box I've seen sold. Thus far, this one is the best. The reel system is sturdy and very smooth. The line-lock is easy to use and feels sturdy enough to last. The hook at the end is large enough to use when wearing gloves. The end hook 'stay' is phenominal. Can rattle around in my tool pail or tool belt with little risk of the line unspooling. The line is hardly bold (which is fine for me since after the chalk is sprayed with line-saver it tends to get a bit bolder), and doesn't seem to hold much chalk. I need to roll the line up and shake after every snap. Could be that the line just needs some more time to break in, but doing layouts can get a bit tedious. I'd say the line before sprayed with clear spray paint is around 3/32"; about half what most of the Stanley and Irwin boxes snap.In conclusion, I'll never buy a different brand of chalk box. I'm going to order a few more to use different chalk colors. Maybe give a few out to some of my other cutters.Regarding the chalk, 'water-resistant' uhm... no. Perhaps 'humidity resistant', though it performs no different than any other brand of chalk I've used in the past.

I was using cheap Irwin snap lines for 7 years now, and finally got tired of them. With this Tajima I was amazed as soon as I opened the case. You can feel the quality in your hand. Aluminum case will hold up worlds better than plastic. When not using, the fill cap has a nice "latch" that the end hooks onto securely when not using and WILL NOT come off. I can't tell you how many times my Irwin would get pinched under a tool in my toolbag, and when I went to grab it 10' of line would be unwound and chalk on some of my tools. It winds up smoothly and has a line lock so if your arms can span it, you can snap it with your free hand. The fill cap is just a 1/4 turn, and has a nice rubber o-ring to help keep out moisture. The line is a thin braided line and produces a great line every time. No more lines that are 1/8" thick with excess chalk everywhere. I've never thought a chalk line was much of a tool until this Tajima showed me that they actually have "features". Make sure you buy extra Tajima chalk right away, as the bottle that comes with is only 1.4oz. However the small bottle comes in handy as it is much easier to carry around.
