The DVC860D offers VHS recording and playback as well as the quality and convenience of DVD. From one compact device movies and music are available, including MP3s burned to CDs. A camcorder or gaming console plugs right into the unit's front panel for hassle-free connections. DVD features include Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel digital output, TruSurround simulated surround sound, 2x and 4x zoom, search speeds up to 60x, bookmarking, parental lock, and program and resume play.

The VCR's four-head design ensures smooth slow-motion play (forward and reverse) and clear still-frame images, and the unit records and plays back stereo audio in hi-fi sound. Nineteen-micron heads deliver the clearest possible picture when recording or viewing in EP (extended-play) mode. The VCR also offers an auto-set 181-channel tuner, quasi S-VHS playback (plays but does not record S-VHS tapes), digital tracking, auto head cleaning, one year/seven-event programming, and index and time search.

Inputs and outputs include front and rear audio/video and an RF input for the VCR, combined DVD and VCR audio/video and RF outputs, and for the DVD player, component-video, S-video, and composite-video outputs, as well as one each stereo analog and coaxial digital-audio outputs.

I got this item several years as a present for my mother.First - The description said you could record the DVD to a VHS tape...NOT TRUE atleast not with out some surgery inside the case.Second - The thing began to eat tapes within a yearThird - The DVD literally burned the plastic coat of a disk on christmas eve of year 2...then began to scratch every disk you put in it.Total piece of garbage...Wish I had spent the couple more bucks and just gotten a good brand at a Big Box Store.

Good buy for money. A little bulky but overall good product. It's not progressive scan (for you flat panel owners)so look elsewhere.

I've had two of these units for three years now - both in fine working order, although I practically never used their VHS features. They're light, easy to work with, and the remote control is easy to figure and hold. There is no DTS-mode for these. At the time of this writing, I'm sure that spending $100.00 on a DVD unit nets you better options...

Well this is something new for me -- an electronics review -- but I just had to put in my two cents on this product. I ordered this DVD/VCR combo for the family for Christmas after our ten-year old VCR finally bit the dust. After reading a few glowing reviews and spending less money for this unit than I did ten years ago for the old VCR, I felt like I made a great buy. But shortly after placing the order, the negative reviews started popping up for this item, and I got nervous that I once again I let the penny-pincher in me make an unwise buying decision. Well now the holidays are over, the unit is set up and running and ... (drumroll please) ... it's great! Granted I don't play DVDs like I do CDs, but I have experienced no problems whatsoever. The picture quality is first-rate. It plays Disney and various other movies without problems, though I haven't tried DVD-Rs. The VCR provides high quality images on playback of taped TV-shows, and on our worn-out old kids-videos. It even will timer record on the VCR while the DVD is playing -- what a luxury! Sure it doesn't have a lot of bells and whistles, but at this price what do you expect! My old clunker VCR was cheap and it didn't have a lot of features either, and it outlasted my friends and families fancier units by years. Here's to the Sylvania following in its hallowed footsteps!

You can't go wrong for a hundred bucks, but if you're expecting all the features you get with an individual VCR or DVD player, you may be disappointed. There are very few buttons on the front of the unit ... there isn't even a "pause" button for the VCR on the unit. As for DVD, the only buttons on front are play and stop. I also have problems with the menu for the vcr and the remote. All in all it's a very good deal, though. I've only had it a couple of weeks, but the picture quality so far has been fine.
