Don't get me wrong, this is a well made damn fine compass, but be aware that if you watch the YouTube promo for this product, they will tell you that the compass is globally balanced. If you purchase one from Amazon however, it will arrive specifically balanced for the Northern hemisphere - making it practically useless if you live down here in Australia. I don't think Amazon would be aware of this issue or take any note of where they are sending their compass products, since there is no tick box to specify balance options when you purchase the product. I therefore would advise against purchasing this product from Amazon if you live down under.

I bought this to help me learn about setting magnetic declination. Big issues:1.) When you set a proper WEST declination, the way the compass is marked makes it LOOK like the compass says you're setting an EAST declination. Took me a long time to figure that out. It always seemed backwards of what I needed to do, and turns out, it was.2.) The orienting lines / meridian lines are locked in place with the doghouse, so you can't use them to take map readings protractor-style. If you try to take a map reading with the edge of your compass in the direction of travel and the orienting lines aligned to the map grid, you will still need to twist the dial by the amount of the declination before you'd be heading in the right direction. The only way to take a map reading with built-in declination would be to try to align the compass rose heading numbers around the edge of the bezel with the map grid, which is stupid. You could also set declination to 0, then take the map reading the normal way, and then HOLD THE BEZEL FIXED and set the declination. Every time you need to take a reading. That's just dumb. I don't understand why they made it this way, except for it's cheaper. So yes, I regret ever buying this. Don't buy this if you want to understand and use a magnetic declination setting.Look at these instead: Brunton TruArc 7, Brunton TruArc 15, Suunto MC-2, Silva Ranger 2.0, Silva Terra Expedition S

Legible writings throughout the compass… very useful for older pair of eyes! Yes… it can be used in poor light.. ! The mirror appears to be made of glass… will see how it fairs in the field. Best of all… declination adjustments can be made without using tools, furthermore.. it is a simple step to undertake without fear of breaking the compass. The quality of construction and ease of use makes it an extremely cost effective investment.

I like it, easy to use. The declination adjustment is novel and easy to use. However it is also easy to mis-adjust so have to pay attention. The materials and functions seem good. It is responsive and well damped. For my purposes it's a keeper.

For me, this is the Lafite Rothschild of compasses. It is the neatest and most telling compass tool that I’ve worked with over the years. It has a solid build, a rich set of geometric flavours and the angled mirror is extremely useful for taking precise measurements. I estimate precision up to 0.5 degrees if you’re still. That’s an invaluable tool in certain circumstances but especially when practicing for navigation.Highly recommended .

There are lots of reviews written. It seemed like it could be decent so decided to give it a try. Seems like a great compass. Sight works well and is on the standard top position. Rubber feet hole it in place on surfaces. Has a decent magnifier and scales, and a clinometer. Declination is not hard to set, and it also stays put where it's set. Markings are very luminous, photo with the review is from charging about ten minutes under relatively dim indoor light, and taken in a darkened but not totally dark room, and I can clearly make out all the luminous markings, was surprised how well I could see even the north marking. Instructions are thorough and well written. Compass is made in Taiwan! 👍 👍 NOT China. That gets two very solid thumbs up from me. Has a break away lanyard, which is a good safety feature. Manual says it has a 5-year warranty.

I'm always on the lookout for the least expensive quality product, and this might be it for compasses. It does all the things I want and costs a lot less than a Suunto. And frankly, I like it more than my Suunto. There is a cheaper compass than this floating around out there under various brand names, but that one suffered from poor build quality that left me a few degrees off course. My two minor complaints, neither of which stops me from using this every time I go out with the compass:The clino sometimes interferes with the needle unless I'm being properly good at holding the compass level. Really though, this isn't a problem if you're using the compass right. The declination is really, really easy to set. No more fiddling around with tools and weird ratcheting mechanisms that you're worried will break. On one occasion, I accidentally unset the declination (because it's so easy to set). But that's only happened once, and it certainly easy enough to verify that it's correct visually. Overall I think the design of the declination setting mechanism is a good one.
