Small size and portable. Easy to use to measure moisture content in firewood. Would be nice if it didn’t jus measure the outside shallow layer. Measure different parts of the firewood to get a more accurate reading.

As described.Pros: Excellent instructions. Very intuitive. Construction is consistent with Stihl standards. Corded pin cap is not loseable and doesn't interfere with use.Cons: Less about this product, and more about the technology itself. When you are testing, you are only NMT 1/8 inch (3mm) deep. You are only getting surface cure read on wood.For example: I cut 3 weeks ago. Cured firewood is 10 to 20%. Both the Hackberry and persimmon were half dead when felled. Almost all limbs split at least once, and larger limbs and trunks split to NMT 6x6x16. Hackberry tested out at 12-16% and persimmon 14-18%.Now testing out at 2% and 5% respectively. This may be accurate for cut or split faces, however I refuse to believe that these are reflecting the deeper cure element of wood.This year's cut goes the the rear and last year leftover will rotate forward.If anyone has any professional knowledge, I'm all ears.

I bought it because most Stihl products I have worked well and have been well designed. This is a terrible exception. Why? (1) WHEN IT WORKS it is confusing and difficult to use what should be very simple to measure wood moisture. Need to push button and hold for the right amount of time --and the right number of pushes to select moisture reading, and to avoid the temperature readings, in C or F. Stays active only short time before it needs more button pushes to get it active again to measure moisture. (2)EVEN WORSE-- it on numerous time has just stopped responding to the button. Then after being inoperative for a time, it may suddenly work. Or not. I thought is might be bad batteries--but took them out and measured them--they were fine--and when I put them back again it worked again. Furthermore, the price was higher than others--which I paid for what I expected to be a high quality Stihl product.

I have a larger more expensive meter, but bought this for field use" rather than having to bring the larger one in a case. As far as I can tell it's pretty accurate, within 2 or 3 % of the other meter, but fits in you pocket

Acheté pour mesurer le taux d’humidité de mon bois de chauffage. Souvent, je n’obtiens aucune lecture, sinon des lectures très différentes sur un même morceau. Fragile, peu fiable.

I have almost given up / discarded the unit as it seems to me that it is too complex to turn on & in my largish hands is a very small instrument. Not a fan at all

My part-time job is raising tropical hardwoods. With no education on the subject of harvesting, milling and drying wood, I was frustrated by warped and twisted boards with checking (cracking) ends. I soon learned how important the moisture content was, but had no way to get a reading on it. Shopping on Amazon, I came across the Stihl meter. I have a couple of Stihl chain saws and the quality has been unsurpassed, so this seemed like a natural product to have. I was concerned about reviews on the product, not for quality, but for delivery. Seems some folks thought it took to long to get one from Germany, where it is made. Well, surprise me! I received mine in nine days after the order, in great packaging. So easy to use and very accurate. I've compared readings to a friends moisture meter and the Stihl is easier to read and so compact it fits in my shirt pocket.

I ordered this before I knew it was coming from Germany with a scheduled four week delivery time. It came to me in the California foothills in just six days from Hamburg! Speedy delivery! I was testing some firewood I had delivered in August. after I split the logs my readings are 40 to 50% moisture in the bigger logs. And 30 % in the smaller. Now I know I'm going to have to stack it for a speed dry in the Indian summer sun in the 80-90 degree days. I'm going to have to burn the wood starting November. At least I know the firewood company burned me. And I have 3 to 4 weeks left with my drying out strategy. I'm going to split the bigger logs so they'll dry out just a little bit faster! And move the bigger logs onto the covered porch when the weather cools off and use the ceiling fan air movement!
