Received the straight edge and opened it immediately only to find it had rust in several places. One of the rust spots was on the critical edge. I returned and reordered the last one available. I'll cross my fingers that the next one is better.UPDATE: I have received and returned a total of 3 straight edges, all have had rust on them. I am waiting on number 4.UPDATE #2: This is the fourth I have ordered and returned. all have been rusty. This is a precision instrument that is ground to very tight tolerances. It should have no rust. All 4 are scrap! I just ordered #5. I keep hoping that someone will notice and check the inventory since 3 have been returned, received, and credited.UPDATE #3 Well that is 5 for 5 with rust!Update #4 Received the 6th straight edge today and NO RUST!!!

I use this for set up of wood working machines. It is pricey, but the high accuracy of the straightedge makes set up easy and highly accurate. For me it was worth the price.

Mine arrived bowed and with a nick on one of the straight edges. That side does not seem flat. The top face seems flat but I just can't trust it. I'm amazed this isn't shipped with any foam for protection. I will be sending it back for a replacement, will update how that one turns out.

After looking at steel vs aluminum and Starrett vs the others, I decided to buy the best. Unfortunately the "crate" that others mention it's shipped in is a bowed piece of cottonwood. So I unwrapped it and the straight edge was also bowed (big surprise). Too bad, since it's heavy and theoretically as straight as anything on the market. This demonstrates very poor quality control by Starrett. I can't believe they would take the time to machine this to perfection, just to ruin it it packaging.

What's to say. Difficult for a hobbyist like myself to justify, but SO nice to have such a good known benchmark in the shop. Glad I have it, sorry I waited so long.I can't say for sure how accurate it is, because by design it's the most accurate thing in my shop. That's why I got a Starrett.I'd previously been struggling along with a two-foot not-as-straight-edge. Probably good to .002" over it's length. So when it said my 36 x 30 router table was "dead flat", I took it with a grain of salt. Well, ten minutes after this one arrived, I learned that the table has a 12-thousandths dip.Mine arrived with it's own wooden support tray. Just cheap spruce, but it does the job. Even though there are load points marked on one edge, the label says the recommended storage is FLAT. So, I keep it on the wooden tray, on top of some wall cabinets, out of harm's way.

It is well made. It ships in a wooden cradle to make sure it arrives in the same condition that it left the factory.

I use this for checking my jointer, and it does exactly what it's supposed to do. I stalled on buying this for a long time on account of the price, and I felt I could get by with a woodpecker straight edge. I could, but this is so much easier. It's the correct tool for the job. Unlike the woodpecker, it stands on edge, and of course it works with feeler gauges. It is extremely heavy and the edges are uncomfortably sharp. This is all by design, of course, but it is not something you just grab one-handed.All in all a terrific investment.

Item as expected. Needs to have a storage case for protection. Otherwise a 5/5.

Straight! This is a quality tool from Starrett. I use it to set up my jointer and it works great. It did come in a cardboard box with a wood support which I still use to store it. Maybe someday I will make a better storage box...
