Starrett has had a great reputation for years. It is well-earned. I like this tool because it has all the precision excellence and accuracy one can expect from them, and I like the fact that this one is made in The United States of America. I use this quite a lot, and am very pleased that I can rely upon it to give me the excellent accuracy that I need.

It's rare these days to have a really great buying experience from both the company producing a product as well as the third party seller serving as the vendor. This is one of those situations for me. Starrett products are very hard to surpass in both quality and accuracy. They are an excellent company that I will continue to purchase from simply for the peace of mind that my measuring tools are accurate. No real shocker there, you get what you pay for and this tool delivers. I am, however, very impressed with the seller I purchased these through, Ideal Precision Instrument Service. The shipping was extremely prompt, and they arrived very well packaged in a large box with a ton of padding. Nice professional invoice and info about the company were included. Overall very pleased and will definitely use this company again for other measuring tool purchases.

The Amazon reviews for Starrett 120A calipers are mixed-up between the Chinese & USA versions. This was confusing until checking with Starrett. The 120A-X versions are made in the Athol Massachusetts. If you want USA precision made, mark sure the model name ends in "A".120A = USA - Highest grade3202 = China - Mid-grade version with some plastic partsBuild Quality:The USA version is 100% stainless steel with ZERO plastic and precisely machined. Actually there is a small plastic bumper at the The unit comes in the classic Starrett red box with a steel hinge pin for years of operation. These calipers are STOUT and don't flex.Accuracy:The 120A does not require "finessing" your thumb for the right pressure to get a reading, a difference from the Chinese off-brand versions. On a 1" Mitutoyo certified gauge block, the 120A was spot on out of the box after wiping calipers. Regardless of light or medium pressure on the 120A, the result was repeatable time and again. My previous Harbor Freight digital calipers would vary 300 thousandths depending on small changes in thumb pressure.Subjective View:Just hold the 120A in your hand compared to any of the inexpensive Chinese versions and the quality becomes self-apparent.If the version you bought does not clearly say "Made in the United States", you errantly bought the Chinese version.Really nice to no longer fight the tool and get accurate readings which can be trusted. The extra about $110 was worth it. The old says “Buy once, Cry once” applies here. Take basic care, and your children will use these calipers when you’re gone.

My Chinese Craftsman caliper was getting pretty beat up and had a cracked face. Wanted to splurge on a USA-made unit and settled on this. The plastic bezel doesn't bother me personally, but indeed it has it. My only complaint is the thumb wheel isn't as easy to use as practically any other caliper I've held. The wheel doesn't protrude enough to get an easy grip on it. Still there and still works, just not as easy and thoughtless (if that's the correct word) as other units. All I care about is repeatability, which this unit has. Returns to 0.000 every time, sometimes maybe a few tenths off, but my Craftsman was returning a few thou or more off every time.

I like the Starrett 120 series Dial Calipers because of their simple, rugged stainless steel construction and ease of reading. Presently, they are the only dial calipers still made in the United States. The combined design features make these calipers a valuable tool for mechanics, inspectors and engineers. They will give accurate, reliable service under adverse shop or laboratory conditions. To add to the convenience of these calipers, may I suggest adding the Starrett #915 belt-loop leather holster to your order, so your caliper is always handily at your side.

I ordered these because I've heard everywhere that Starrett makes precisely machined, accurate tools. My friend got one of their straight edges and I was impressed. I finally decided it might be worth the investment so when I got these calipers I was surprised to find some unacceptable flaws.I had heard about the plastic housing for the dial and was willing to gamble. The dial is fine. Actually the defects are with the machining of the jaws. The contact surfaces on the smaller pair of jaws (sorry I don't know the technical term) when held up to the light are not parallel, not milled flat (think of the outline of an hourglass-an extreme example but it makes my point) and there is a hook on the end of one. I don't see how one is supposed to measure and scribe accurately with that. The fact that these defects are visible with the naked eye is troubling given Starrett's reputation. I need accuracy within .001" in my line of work so these will go back. One more issue, with the main (larger pair of jaws), they do not split at the tip. The two jaws do not meet at a point at the tip, rather the divide between the two jaws is about 1/32" to the side of the tip. Very sloppy for a company that prides itself on fine machine work.As a reference I have a Chinese model at work (about $25) which has served me well and exhibits none of these issues. I was hoping there was something better.
