About this item

  • For use in connecting NPT pipe to schedule 40 PE flexible tubing in a straight run
  • Barbed fitting creates a tight seal on flexible tubing when used with a hose clamp (sold separately)
  • Maximum working temperature of 140 degrees F
  • PVC for strength and resistance to reactions with acids, gasoline, alcohol, and hydrocarbons
  • Meets ASTM D2609 standards for plastic insert fittings and NSF 61 certified for use with potable water

This Spears 1436 series tube fitting is made of gray polyvinyl chloride (PVC) plastic and has a male National Pipe Thread (NPT) thread on one end and a barbed insert on the other for connection to ASTM International schedule 40 polyethylene (PE) pipe in a straight run. The adapter's barbed fitting creates a tight seal on flexible PE pipe when used with a hose clamp (sold separately). The PVC fitting has a maximum working pressure that is dependent on the PE pipe it is used with, a maximum working temperature of 140 degrees F, and resists reactions with acids, gasoline, alcohol, and hydrocarbons. This male barb tube fitting meets ASTM D2609 standards for plastic insert fittings for use with PE pipe, ASTM schedule 40 standards for wall thickness, and is NSF International 61 certified for use with potable water.

Pipe fittings are components used for connecting, terminating, controlling flow, and changing the direction of piping in many different industries. When purchasing pipe fittings, consider the application, as this will affect material type, shape, size and required durability. Fittings are available threaded or unthreaded, in many shapes, styles, sizes, and schedules (pipe wall thickness).

Spears Manufacturing produces thermoplastic fittings and valves for fluid, drain, waste, and vent systems. The company, founded in 1969 and headquartered in Sylmar, CA, meets International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standard 9001.

I have used these for a while when the threads on the male end of my garden hose corrode so badly (metal) that I can’t get the nozzle off. (I’ve since learned to use Vaseline, which helps, but metal is metal). I have to cut off that end (which I now do also with any new hose that has a metal end), and replace it with this piece.Neither Orbit or other “store” brands work. They say they are for a 5/8” hose, but in reality the stem that goes into hose end is always a bit too loose. Because of this, even when you try to secure it with the screw on piece over the hose and this piece, making it as tight as possible, the pressure of the water makes this piece pop out anyway, or you have water leaking from the connection. These are very sturdy and reliable. Once on, there’s no leakage from hose or nozzle, unlike those from other manufacturers. It takes a bit of effort to get this piece into hose end (be sure end of hose is evenly cut), but with a mallet it can be done with patience. I’m an older woman, so I don’t have the strength to maneuver this piece into a hose end by hand. Once it’s in, I still use the piece that screws on over the hose further securing this piece…just to be sure.My hoses here in FL get *a lot* of use, and the threads on this piece held up for a few years before getting worn enough to cause a slight leak from the nozzle. (Not to mention the nasty effects of the heat and sun on *everything* here.) I have to take the spray nozzle off regularly to attach the power washer, sprinklers, etc., so these pieces get a real workout almost 365 days a year with all my landscaping, etc. It would likely last much longer up north.

This 1/2 inch barb replaced the old barb fitting for my dishwasher drain hose.It gets screwed into a 1/2 PVC female thread, so I used non-hardening PTFE paste thread sealer approved for use with PVC.Works great, no leaks, and the barb fitting is fairly long for a good fit for the drain hose. This is a decent quality part, probably costs more than what you’ll find at the home improvement center, but free Prime delivery and no trip to the store makes it a good value.
