in preparation to install some fence post, I need something to probe into the dirt to locate the septic tank and adjoining leech pipes and this did the trick. It's solidly built with stainless steel and very sturdy. The pointed tip makes it easy to pierce into the dirt and the handle is perfect for pushing it deeper into the groud. I will be using this rod in other locations to ensure I'm not digging into any rocky or solid areas around the property as well. Nice tool to have around.

We got this soil probe for locating the fill lines in our septic tank. Which we did, and this worked as well as we'd hoped. It saved a lot of time and headache.Whats great, is we can also use this down on our off-grid property, for setting fence post locations.I highly recommend this inexpensive, well built, less than $30.00 , SS soil probe .

The stainless steel frame is of high quality, but the bar easily loosens after repeated use. The bar handles are made of cheap plastic that has a strong chemical odor and now slide off the bars after repeated use. I used this bar to create multiple holes for inserting grounding bars in various locations for an electric fence. After the tenth hole, the bar must be constantly adjusted because it loosens. If more attention were paid to the handle material and thread quality, it would have received a higher rating.

The soil downhill from my house has shifted over the past 40 years. Slightly, but enough to break a septic line that was buried without a metal wire to allow detection with a metal detector. So I bought this one and I was very pleased with my decision. This tool is a heavy-duty probe rod and not a dime-store device or a soil core collecting device. The tool is awesome: the steel holds up well under my push down into the soil; the three segments allow shortening the probe and easy storage; and the handle has nice soft padding. I tighten up the segments using the hex keys but just to be safe I push down and rotate in the direction to further tighten the segments. The tool comes with a pair of gloves, nice enough, but not really ones that I would use given my own sets of gloves. In addition to the septic line, I’m using the probe to look for rocks. You ask why? I’m on the side of a ridge where half the soil underground is made up of rocks from fist-sized to duffel bag or sometimes larger. When I’m looking to drive a pole to support lily trees, etc., I find it a lot easier to know whether I’m going to hit a rock before I start driving the stake! I also do multiple probes in a small area before committing to dig the area up for a new flower bed. This is a great buy—excellent quality and low price—for anyone with a bit of land around the house.

Need to find your septic? This is the tool you need. This heavy-duty metal rod is put together easy. It comes with 2 Allen wrenches to make sure it's tight and then for breaking it down for storing back in the bag. You also get a pair of gloves to use. The handles make it easy to push into the dirt. It could save you money if you find your septic on your own and get its location marked before you call to have it cleaned out.

My last soil probe was made of an old hay implement from a straightened our rake tine, the metal was like spring steel and did not flex out of shape while probing unfortunately it walked away with the neighbor one day and never came back. I tried making these from a a softer steel and they were not strong enough for the task. This tool is made well and of high tensile steel which resists bending out of shape while probing, I would prefer if holes were not drilled in the side to accommodate tightening tools which cause a weak spot and would rather a hex or grip-able splines were formed into the rod to use a wrench or pliers for tightening. Although the threaded connections are tight I only rotate the spike while turning in a direction that will not loosen the fittings. If used with care and trying to keep the spike in a straight horizontal alignment with the ground and not using in hard or rocky soil this is a real time and money saver finding buried pipe and sewer line....For safety sake I always have a utility tracker check for underground electric systems before probing.

This is a very heavy duty, professional grade probing rod. Note that it is NOT a soil probe like we use for collecting soil cores for soil sampling. This is a very sturdy rod that you press into the ground to locate solid objects underground, like a septic tank, drain pipe, or really old grave markers that have become covered over with sod. This tool is completely rigid when assembled. There are several pieces that you screw together to assemble to tool. It only takes a minute or two, but the tolerances are extremely tight, meaning it takes some effort to twist these together. To remedy this, they include two little tools that you can insert into holes in the rods to twist them together. Those tools are not necessary, but do help by providing additional leverage. Once assembled, this tool is very solid, not at all flimsy, and can easily be pressed into the ground for probing what is beneath the surface.
