This mortar and pestle is really very lovely and functional. It arrived in perfect condition and it is just what I wanted. It is heavy, very well made and the finish is perfect. I only wash it by hand and it looks like new every time. So very pleased with this purchase,

The key to a decent mortar and pestle is durability. This product, for this price, is well worth it. It's durable, it handles grinding and mashing and powdering and muddling and all the other words for taking a blunt object and smashing the crap out of something inside of a little bowl-thingie.Good price, fast delivery, easy to clean.Highly recommended.

I really like this! I use it to crush dried herbs for cooking (which is currently my only use for it). It works fantastic for that purpose. However, my 4 rather than 5 star review comes from the issue of when the bottom part of it started peeling off. It's made of very beautiful sturdy stone, but the bottom part has a cheap felt-green bottom. The intention is obviously to keep it from sliding around on your counter while grinding, but poorly executed. So no dishwasher (understandable), but when hand-washing it, it inevitably leaves it's marks anyway (see photo). When it comes down to it, I'm still glad I bought this. It's been very useful and I don't regret my purchase.

I love this M&P. It looks gorgeous, is a very comfortable size (big enough to work comfortably but small enough that you won't have to chase your herbs around the bottom, either) it's easy to clean thoroughly, and perhaps most importantly it pulverises very well. Having bought and used (or tried to use) a much smaller, soapstone M&P around a year ago, I know how frustrating it can be working with too little space and a porous material that absorbs a little of everything you put in it with each use. I have no such problems with this set, and I'm confident that you won't either. Also, some people say they've had problems with this model creating a lot of "chalk," which I imagine is fine marble dust ground out of the piece with use. I have never had this problem, and I've worked it pretty hard. It seems to me that if you're using enough force on this thing to wear it down that quickly, you would probably realize it. And if you need that much force to pulverize whatever you're grinding, you should probably find a different tool with which to do so. Also, obviously be careful not to drop it, but otherwise it seems pretty sturdy.*Edit - Here's an important warning: don't try to clean one of these sets with acetone. Acetone may seem appealing for its ability to dissolve some of the more difficult to remove plant buildup (like Rosemary) but I just found out the hard way that acetone will strip the polished surface off of your set. Mine is now stripped in places along the handle and I really wish I hadn't done that. The best answer for cleaning it is soaking it and/or using soap and water, and leaving it to dry completely until any remnant of scent disappears. This has worked well for me.

For the price, this is a very good Mortar & Pestle, While it DOES produce chalk, it is not in the copious amounts the people here are saying it does. The simple fact is, most stone Mortars (especially in this price range) WILL produce some form of chalk, and the amount produced here is more than acceptable (almost none at all) for just about any purpose. Also, they do not glaze the insides of most stone mortars because not only would it chip and flake off over time (nobody want's to eat glaze) but you would loose the effects you gain by using a stone Mortar & Pestle (IE: May as well use ceramic)Anyway, back to the specifics of this product, It is as described, but I would definitely wash it twice before using it, as it does come INITIALLY with quite a good amount of dust from the manufacturing process, and as stated above, it would definitely add more minerals to your diet. After the initial washes though, while it does produce dust, however it is minimal, it is NOT anything you will need to worry about as it is not enough to cause any change in health, taste, nutrition, texture, looks, anything, what is produced. You wont notice nor will it have any effects. If you want no dust, go with a ceramic Mortar and Pestle. So to sum up, given the type of Mortar it is, the chalk produced is acceptable (especially for this price range), The quality is also very good for this price range, and it seems to be durable as I have put a good number of hours into it now and it still works and looks as good as the day I bought it. Overall, 5 stars.

Having owned several mortar & pestles in the past for grinding, this does the trick. Many of the mortar & pestles I looked at had very high sides which is only useful if you want to grind about a tablespoon worth of stuff.I chose this one because I wanted a more shallow bowl which would allow for more than a tablespoon's worth of grinding. The end of the pestle is only about an inch in diameter. I would have liked one that was wider in order to crush more in less time. That is my only gripe about this product.I also went with the marble because I had one in the past that I loved but it had to stay with my parents when I moved out. I'm sure that granite would have worked, but I didn't like that they came only in very dark colors. Just a personal preference. As for another reviewer who mentioned adding that the inside wasn't polished and therefore he was getting additional chalky minerals in his diet. That guy is smoking crack. Obviously, he has never use a mortar & pestle before and doesn't know how to use one. The reason the bottom of the pestle and the inside of the mortar isn't polished is to provide friction so that the items can be ground. When I first got mine, I purposely ground the pestle into the mortar to see if any residue came off of it. Nothing. Nada. Zilch.
