This book has helped me understand how odd note groupings such as 5's and 7's can be used in today's music. If you listen to a lot of drumming by Vinnie Colaiuta, then this book will help you understand where he's coming from. It has triggered a creative spark in me to compose drum solos that I first write down on a piece of paper or on my iphone's Polynome app, then proceed to study the lick on the drum kit. The audio CD has a lot of valuable insights by Gary not found on the book, especially on how to practice the studies.I own a lot of drum books - classics and newer ones. Although this was written quite a long time ago, this book for me is still cutting edge and will definitely stand the test of time.

pour ceux ou celles qui veulent se mettre au sticking pattern , pas à hésiter , lancez-vous , attention , c'est du travail de longue haleine avant d'être efficace , mais ça peut donner des idées ...bon travail

Just my opinion; unless you are more advanced and looking for adventures, this is the least useful book of the four from Gary Chaffee's Patterns. The "time functioning", "sticking" and "technique patterns" are seemingly more useful to the beginner and especially intermediate. Bounce between these and become familiar, then move onto the blue book "rhythm and meter".

Chaffee doesn't mess with "popular beats", but gets right to the building blocks of rhythm and meter in a clear, concise manner. I often wonder why otherwise highly educated musicians cannot play quintuplets, struggle with odd groupings, and ignore the basics of rhythm and time. Every musician should work through this book.

These series of books are the most in depth and comprehensive (three in all) books for any drummer beginner to experienced. Truly brilliant not scratching the surface here!
