Horticultural perlite is clean, sterile, pH neutral, non-flammable, odorless, nontoxic and neither decays nor shrinks – even pests such as insects and fungi can’t destroy it. While horticultural perlite does retain water and food for the growing plants, it is best used for drainage purposes. A good potting soil should contain at least 25 percent perlite for proper drainage. Since vermiculite retains far more water and food for the growing plant, but does not provide the superior drainage properties of perlite, you can have an even better soil mixture by adding both bulk perlite and vermiculite to your soil. Horticultural perlite is a lightweight substitute for sand and is very useful in a hydroponic gardening systems. Additionally, it is perfect for seed germination and cutting propagation.

Absolutely love this stuff. I'll always pick this over the big box store brands. Miracle grow brand is like 30% powder in my experience. This brand has larger granules, less powder, and for the price, is a great value. This is 100% a must for my potted citrus and mango trees that hate wet feet.In fact, when getting a new citrus or mango tree I completely wash off all that compost muck suffocating the roots and replace with a mixture of 70% perlite and 30% sand. Then top with compost /worm castings. They love it and I see so much more growth. Its stressful for the tree but will pay off long term. Don't forget this substrate mix drys out much faster than most compost muck potting soil mixes though.

This bag is big I tell you what, this is also my second bag. The price on this big perlite is excellent for the quantity received; I will note that there is a large amount does sediment towards the bottom and mixed but the quantity of good perlite you get far exceeds the amount you would get for the price of many others. So this is perlite.

While this is not the best quality perlite I've used, it is more than good enough to get the job done well when preparing raised beds. It arrived in perfect shape with zero spillage. The main difference I've encountered compared with other more (and way more) expensive brands is the variation in sizes. But the variation is not to the degree that it affects usage.Although the bag is pretty large, the total weight is not bad (about 15 pounds) so it's not a chore to lug around. A very good value if you need a significant amount of perlite.

I found buying this, for me, was the most cost effective size. I was able to add this to 10 /( 2 cubic feet) (56liter)packages of raised bed planter amended soil. I still have more than half the container left which I will likely use for the in ground planting beds. Make sure to ALWAYS wear a mask when using thus as it is extremely dangerous to inhale the dust. This perlite was a nice mix of " crumble " size and worked perfectly for my needs. Once incorporated into the soil and watered the dust was no longer an issue.

I grow almost all of our vegetables and herbs under LED lights in our large basement. Although I do use a good quality potting soil for my plants, I amend it to improve water retention and drainage and also add organic matter such as sphagnum peat moss and coco coir.In the past, I have bought perlite that had so much powder and tiny pieces in it, it would not have helped at all for drainage, which is the purpose of using perlite. Since I grow quite a few plants in pots, having to buy multiple 8 quart bags of anything doesn't do much for me.In the past I have bought course vermiculite in this brand and have been very happy with it, so I decided to try the course perlite from them. This perlite is perfect for my purposes and for the quantities I use. The pieces are not rock sized nor are the tiny pieces that would not help at all with drainage. The sizes of the pieces do vary, but none are too large or too small. There is some dust when I pour it into a bucket, but that is to be expected with perlite.Personally, I feel this is the best quality perlite I have bought to-date. The variety of sizes in it are perfect for providing excellent drainage. I use vermiculite to maintain an even moisture in the soil, and also coco coir and sphagnum peat moss to maintain even moisture and to provide organic material. By using these additives in my potting soil, many of my plants grown indoors are 4-7 years old and are still healthy and producing. The pictures included are all vegetables and herbs grown in my basement garden.UPDATE 01/13/24:I have ordered and used a few bags of this "coarse" perlite. The last bag I received the pieces were much smaller than previous bags. I will still use this bag, but I am not pleased that the quality of this product is not consistent. I have reduced my star rating by 1 star because of the inconsistency in this product.I hope this review was helpful for you.

This is just a massive bag of perlite. As someone who does a lot of container gardening this material is indispensable and a worthy investment. Just pour some water on it first, the perlite dust is pretty toxic to inhale. But that's perlite.

I honestly didn't realize how big this bag was going to be until I received it. It IS WELL WORTH EVERY PENNY! I will have to purchase another in the near future just to ensure I'll have seemingly a "life time" supply. If you love and have lots of plants and need to make many transplants, then this is most definitely the right product, and size, for you. This is enough just to sprinkle through the lawn (2000sq. ft or more) and over time help aerate the soil as the turf builds. The volume will amaze you for the price...

This is an incredible value for good quality perlite. It’s a huge bag that should last the average gardener quite a long time. Like any perlite, it can be a little dusty when working with it, but getting it a moist first solves the dust problem. The perlite is of very good quality in my opinion and works excellent to improve water retention when mixed into soils. The texture is of good quality perlite and in nice sized pieces, not too small. It’s very easy to use and plants love it! This is an incredible value if you buy a lot. Let Amazon save you some money on some really good perlite. Thanks!
