The caliper is reasonably smooth sliding and is within the 1% accuracy. What looks like a fine adjustment wheel in the photo is just a knob. Mine came with such loose threads on the clamp screw that I could pull out the thumb screw without turning it. I ended up taking it apart and re threading it for a larger screw. I mostly just use a 4 inch caliper for running to the hardware store to do a quick and relatively crude measurement. This tool is adequate for my purposes.

I prefer a 4 inch dial caliper just because it is more convenient to use than larger ones for most of my purposes. This tool fills the bill perfectly.
