About this item

  • EASY TO READ DIAL: Large dial with easy to read graduations, Dial Completes one revolution per each .100”
  • CONTAINED GEARS: Inverted covered rack prevents dirt accumulation in rack gear teeth, Self-contained movement eliminates gear misalignment.
  • THUMBROLL: Thumbroll allows for quick, accurate measurements
  • KNURLED LOCK: Assures precise settings to check measurements across multiples objects
  • ACCURATE MEASUREMENTS: Hardened stainless steel throughout with measuring faces precision ground and microlapped for exceptional accuracy

The Fowler Extended Range 24" stainless steel dial caliper has dial graduations of 0.001" with +/- 0.003" accuracy, has a sliding jaw with lock, and a covered rack. The knurled lock screw holds the sliding jaw in position when needed. A covered rack prevents dirt and debris from entering the gearing, and helps prevent measurement errors. A thumb-operated fine adjustment roller allows for one-handed use. This caliper is used for measuring inside dimensions (ID), outside dimensions (OD), and depths. The caliper measures 0.10" per revolution of the dial. The black dial has 0.001" graduations in white and the beam is engraved every 0.10" graduation. The hardened stainless steel components, including the beam, measuring surfaces, rack, gears, and depth rod, offer corrosion resistance, increased accuracy, and long life. Self-contained movement eliminates gear misalignment, while the dual shock-proof drive mechanism reduces wear on the rack and pinion. An adjustable dial enables zero setting. Spring loaded anti-backlash gearing offers increased accuracy over standard gear configurations. The hardened stainless steel beam is polished to a satin chrome finish, to help prevent glare. This caliper comes with a fitted case. Dial calipers are measuring instruments commonly used for inspection in manufacturing to provide the precise measurements of an object. A pair of jaws attached to a long beam with a marked scale is used to measure inside, outside, and step measurements in standard or metric units. An additional depth probe slides along the beam to take depth measurements. One jaw is fixed to the end of the scale, while the other jaw slides along it to take measurements. A circular dial indicator is fixed to the movable jaw on a toothed gear rack that transfers movement of the jaws to the dial needle. The base measurement is taken from the long beam, which provides the initial whole measurement in inches or centimeters, and added to the dial reading, which provides fractional measurements in inches or millimeters. Compared to digital calipers, dial calipers are more durable, but are more susceptible to shock damage and prone to getting dirt in the gears, which can cause accuracy problems. Vernier calipers are more durable than dial calipers because they do not have internal moving parts, but they can be more difficult to read. Dial calipers are commonly used in fields such as metalworking, mechanical engineering, machining, and carpentry.

I bought these mainly for placement of parts on larger weldments when I need to hold tolerances closer than .030 and they are fantastic. I’ve used a pair of SPI branded 24 inch calipers in the past and I feel these are much nicer. These are even a big help with odd shaped small parts because the jaws are so long. They are very smooth for being such a long caliper and very accurate and the finish is great, they’re very smooth feeling all the way down the body and the jaws.

Accuracy confirmed with various pin gauges. It came in a plastic case because they don't make wedding cases to calipers anymore, fine. Due to the packing Grease it was a little stiff when I first opened it quick fix with WD-40, or blaster penetrating oil. My biggest concern that I couldn't find on any part of the description, or on any other review was how big the ID Jaws are. The 24-inch caliper at my job has ID jobs that are 7/16 and I wanted it to be a regular half inch so I don't have to get a calculator every time I measure an inside diameter.Until further notice I do recommend this item.

I've only used it a few times, but it's a good caliper, especially for the price. My only minor issue is that the jaws are quite thick -- maybe 3/16", but I don't have the caliper in front of me right now. For most uses this won't be a problem. I can see, however, how it might make getting some measurements a challenge.

The description states, "Comes with a fitted case." The case is the blue plastic version seen amongst the various images associated with the Caliper. It is not fitted. Along with those photos is one of the typical wooden case I have received with other Fowler Calipers. This is the fitted version. Not sure why two different cases are pictured, but I got the blue one and it's subpar. The caliper itself is as expected from Fowler products, dependable and accurate with little backlash.
