I find it works better it you put it down underneath the bbq grill down by the flame to get it heated enough to start to smoke.

This cast iron chip smoke box doesn't bend like the thin stainless steel boxes. No issues, easy to clean, (highly recommend applying cooking oil to the cast iron after washing the same as you would with any cast iron. Excellent purchase and worth the money.

It will only work if sitting on a bed of coals or gas flame, does not work well as a "stand alone" A smoke tube works better .

I have a propane box smoker. This box sits on the hot plate and just puffs out the smoke. It’s exactly what I was looking for.

Really like the weight of this. I’ve used steel boxes in the past. Works well in gas bbq but be sure to remove part of grill and put it right on flavor bars to insure it smokes. It heats more slowly and consistently than steel box. It would be nice if there was another deeper version of this with more capacity for longer smokes.

Cast iron construction is a great design and really works well.Buy two of them so that you can have one ready for smoking when the first one runs out. This way you are always prepared and ready for the next step. Each unit is a two piece unit with the base and the lid. These should last quite a long time as long as you keep them away from moisture.

The product looks pretty sturdy except for the hinge which is too loose. I think it would have been better if it was little firmer. Haven't started using the product yet. Will update the review accordingly.

I prefer cooking on charcoal but occasionally cook using propane on a 2 burner infra red grill. I wanted a smoker box that would fit comfortably in my Smoky Joe , Smoky Joe Jr or the gas grill . I also wanted one that was cast iron since I used to have one years ago. I still had a bag of hickory chips from way back when and using foil just isn't consistent enough for me . I found one that fit the bill , was used so it was priced way better than new so I figured I'd give it a try .Other than a decal stuck on the box thanking me for buying used I couldn't tell it wasn't brand new . I've used it twice , once on my Smoky Joe and once on my Smoky Joe Jr , with both giving exactly what I'd hoped for . On the Jr it actually did something I wasn't expecting in that the coals were beneath the box in the center and the heat radiated from the box even better than the coals alone do . I cook indirectly on both charcoal grills and directly on my Aussie square charcoal grill and my Nexgrill infrared . Each method has its advantages and uses but I prefer indirect when possible because it's a slower method that gives more time for more flavors , including smoke , to permeate but for veggies and fish I prefer direct and no smoke .Both times I used the box I did not soak the chips and did not pre season the box . Both grills got a lot of smoke added to the smoke the charcoal produces and while Jr was burgers the big Weber was chicken thigh filets . Both had a hint of sweet added from the hickory and both gained an open fire on cast iron taste which was awesome on the burgers and a pleasant surprise to the chicken .Some have spoken of a concern for rust but I can attest after a few uses and grease from meat slathering the box inside and out the only part that'll possibly rust is underneath as long as it's not left out in the rain . My old box lasted well over a decade and was lost during a move or I'd still be using it now .This box was thicker than my old one so it took a little longer to warm up but once warm it put out a lot of hickory smoke . It was just place it on top of the coals that I already had centred in the grill for indirect cooking and it radiated the heat nicely and actually helped the grill stay hot a little longer than the coals alone so I was able to cook a second batch of burgers without adding more charcoal .Other than being thicker the box looks exactly like the Weber box I bought back in the early 90s .If rust is a worry , season the box like you would any cast iron pan or pot . Any cast iron you cook with will enhance the flavor of whatever you're cooking so if it's a choice between cast iron or stainless steel you'll be glad you chose cast iron even more after it gets used a few times .

I love this smoker box! Solid stainless steel construction. Decent size, to hold a good amount of wood chips . Easy to use/ removable lid. The holes in the lid allow a nice amount of smoke🔥 & flavoring...outstanding. First try did 🥩 and 🦞. ...fantastic!"OUTSET" - Wood Chip Smoker is a great product and great value for 💲

I have used this box twice, and have had some learning issues with it.First: it is a quality product. Heavy gauge stainless steel; I'm guessing it will last a long time. It fits in my BBQ without any problem.Second: it has a design issue. The lid is a separate piece which fits loosely on the box. This is fine until you need to put some more wood chips into the box. Since the box will be very hot, you will be using some sort of tool to manipulate the box lid, and you suddenly have your hands full, including a dangerously hot piece of metal in your tongs (or vise-grip or plier), so you need to set that somewhere. Then you need to either empty the ashes (which will proabably include some glowing coals) so you can refill the box with more wet chips. Then you have to wrestle the hot lid back onto the hot box and then return the unit to the barbecue. It can be done, but it does demand you have a little coordination and that you pay attention to what you are doing (because of the heat involved).Third: the first time I used it, the wet chips in the box went from light smoke to fully aflame in minutes. I had put the box on the ceramic briquettes just above the burners on my propane BBQ. It took several minutes for the soaked chunks in the box to start smoking, at which point I put my chicken into the BBQ. After several minutes I checked because I didn't see any more smoke. The box contents were fully engulfed in flames.I reloaded the box and set it on the cooking grill (several more inches above the fire). This is the method I used the second time I used it, too. This seemed to work better so far as getting smoke was concerned. It takes awhile for the chunks to heat up and start smoking, but they didn't burst into flame.So...well made product with some design issues (does the box need a hinge on the lid?), and you will need to experiment with it to determine the best way to get smoke. I believe the product will last a long time and I will continue to use it.
