I had this charger for a month now (haven't removed the protective plastic on the picture yet) . I like the way the charger operates and how it goes through the steps... 1. Analysing battery, 2. Charging, 3. Conditioning... Etc. I find it very useful. Charged my AGM battery to 100% and it seems that everything works as it should. I really like the compact design of the charger. It took me about 8 hours to charge battery from 20% to 100% as newer batteries I understand need slow charging to prevent overheating. All in all I am satisfied. Hope this helps.

This is a really nice and compact charger that really fulfills all of the needs you would have from a larger charger, as long as you don't mind waiting a few more hours for the charging to finish compared to the larger ones. I haven't tried a lot of other chargers to compare to, but there was nothing extra I would have wanted from this. The size is great because it's also an excellent battery tender if you need one, which means you can just leave it in the engine bay with the hood closed. It's also great during cold weather for that reason - you can just pug it in where you park like a block heater and it won't be stolen. It wasn't 100% perfect though - you'll see a number of concerns in reviews on the LCD quality, and for sure it was variable. When I first used it the digits were all in a state of half on half off, which made it almost impossible to read. I almost returned it but after charging the battery over night the screen was fine again. It got worse again and improved again, and I wonder if the -30C temperature had something to do with that, but it doesn't impact the function. This isn't a complaint, but I was a bit worried by the clicking sound that comes from the ground while connected to the frame while charging, but nothing bad happened, it did it on both vehicles, and it eventually stopped. I still don't know what it was, but it turned out ok so I'm less worried. There's some ambiguity if this one can also do conditioning (desulphating) abused batteries compared to the larger Optima charger (even from Optima's literature). I really can't say, however both batteries were undercharged for a year and this charger did do a conditioning phase after charging. Both batteries are now functioning as original and I think they would have surely had sulphation, so I'm inclined to believe that it works on this one too.

I do not write reviews but I wanted to circle back on this one and give it the praise it deserves. The charger has helped me so it may help you.I purchased it because I accidentally killed the battery in my expedition vehicle. The battery in question is an Odyssey 31M-PC2150ST. I left the keys in the ignition for over a week while camping (oops... whiskey may have been involved) and it was dead to rights when I tried to crank her on... nothing, nada, not even a peep. I jumped her and drove her home cursing the sky that I would need to replace the $450 battery... ya, that is what they cost.Once home I tested the voltage to inspect the condition of the battery... 5.9 volts... hmm, not a great read on a battery that when healthy reads in the 13 v range. However, it is a deep cycle so....maybe?! I looked into chargers that specialized in recovery and that is what brought me to this charger. It did take 3 FULL DAYS to bring the voltage up to a respectable level but after load testing guess what... the voltage held. I have been using her now for about 6 months and she continues to act normally, charge normally and still kick a$%. AWESOME.Fast forward a few months my girlfriend does the same thing... keys overnight this time but she has a standard battery... some Duracell variety in her Pontiac GTO. DEAD. Voltage test = 3.9 v. Yikes! Mind you, mine was a deep cycle... hers was NOT. I told her we would need a new battery but just for giggles I hooked her up to the charger for a recovery attempt. 3 days later... BAM! Like batman laying the Wayne down on the Joker she was put in line. The battery is running perfectly. I honestly don't believe it after such a deep discharge on a standard, flooded cell car battery.Final thought: Get it if you need to recover deeply discharged batteries and/or otherwise perform routine battery maintenance.Does it take a while to charge? Yes. If time is a factor for you there is a pricier version that works faster for about twice the cost. I do not mind the methodical approach.

The optima digital 400 has been used 5 times after recieving it yesterday. We own a number of items facilitating the need for battery maintenance.I have an optima yello top deep cycle that came with my suburban. After the last cold spell here in ohio, and likely affected by insufficient charge, starting the vehicle revealed a sluggish start. I took the vehicle to the local auto parts dealer who performed the routine battery-alternator test. The test showed 12.46vdc with the engine off and 14.5vdc during operation. This was found to be acceptable. But it did need charged.Optima makes 2 chargers. The larger charger is 100 bucks more and claims to recover deeply discharged batteries. The reviews here at amazon also indicate this type of performance with the digital 400. So I opted for the savings. The Optima charger is well designed and well constructed. The charging leads are 6' and are managed by a hook and loop retention system. The charger initializes upon connection to a 120vac power source. Optima recommends a GFI type outlet. This is not a requirement. The device performed flawlessly in a normal outlet. The charger runs an inspection routine on every battery that takes 2 minutes. Afterwhich time the current status of the battery is indicated and if needed, the charge cycle begins. The charger program conditions and charges batteries as it charges. This is shown on the digital display. It can take quite awhile for this charger to completely charge the battery. It does not require monitoring. Once the charge cycle is complete, the charger automatically switches to maintenance mode. This is a nice feature as you can return when you can rather than wait. While the price is a little higher for portable chargers like this, I found the charger to be spot on for all types of batteries. I really like it.

This is one of the most intelligently designed products I've ever used.I also own a Ctek 7002 & a Noco Genius G3500 battery chargers both of which I also like a lot. This one is better. It keeps you apprised of what it is doing. Will tell you if your connection to the battery is bad. And lots of other stuff that you don't have to get out the manual to understand. It has idiot-proof connections for the cords. And even a place for you to wrap the cords around the unit for storage. The wall mount has a place where you can clip on the clamps. Plus, it has well thought-out controls (buttons) on the face of the charger. (For geeks: Great UI design.)I have a classic car that I installed a brand new Optima Red Top battery in last fall. I forgot to disconnect it for the winter. I did a trickle charge on the old battery and a power surge/interruption killed the Noco G3500 charger. I live in rural Wisconsin. (Noco graciously replaced it since it was only 3 months old.) Anyway, the Optima was completely discharged last week. So flat that neither the Ctek nor the Noco would recognize it or start charging. (The Ctek has a setting for Optima batteries, but that made no difference.) The Noco would quickly flash all the lights and the Ctek would think about it and then go into problem mode.So I bought this charger thinking that Optima probably knew how to best charge their batteries. I put in on the battery for 24 hrs. Sure enough! It read 100 percent charge the next day. Started the car and it fired right up. Awesome! It's true! It will charge batteries other chargers won't.The Digital 400 isn't as powerful as Optima's bigger 1200 charger, so it takes longer to do a complete charge or reconditioning. But after reading the reviews on Amazon, it also doesn't have the problems the 1200 seems to have—and it's half the price.Downsides: The wires seem a little insubstantial. (A softer plastic insulation may be the reason for that impression.) The clamps could have bigger jaws and I had to spread the clamp wires more apart (a bigger "Y") to attach to the terminal clamp and a safe grounding point in the engine compartment. It feels substantial. It's seems well made, it's easy to use and it tells you what it's doing. Plus it's a comparable price to the Ctek and Noco chargers. What more can you ask for than that?I am really, really impressed with this little unit.
