I was looking forward to buying in using the styler but it was a waste of money. I followed a tutorial from their website to make sure I am inserting the charcoal correctly. Instead of going in smoothly it broke. When I tried to get it out, three pieces came out. The charcoal is great but not the styler

True, there’s less dust when using, but there’s so much clay in the HB, that it skips color when I work lightly.

Nitram is known for the high quality of their compressed charcoal sticks. This holder isn't worthy of that reputation. It's cheaply made. Period. You can find plenty of holders here and elsewhere of equal or better quality for a lot less. The kick in the nuts is that the charcoal sticks don't even fit in the holder without a lot of trimming - i.e., having to do a lot of the work that you probably bought the holder to avoid. Packaging is nice, though.

I was quite skeptical about this stylus after reading all the reviews. But since my art school requires us to use Nitram charcoal exclusively, I had to at least give it a try regardless of all the negative reviews. It gave me the first impression that the stylus didn’t fit the charcoals. It won’t take much work and time to figure out that the metal part where the charcoals are held is very adjustable and flexible. I just fiddled around with it a bit and all the charcoals can fit into the stylus. I tried it on all different hardnesses/softnesses of Nitram fusains charcoals( from H to B), they all work fine. I particularly love the design that the stylus comes with different colors of caps indicating what softness charcoal is put in. It seems very handy.

Many of the reviews mentioned that the charcoal did not fit the holder and found the product useless. I contacted the Nitram company via its website; however, they don’t monitor their site for questions or they don’t care. I asked if the fitting problem was solved before I spent the money. I noticed that my local Blick store no longer carried the kit with holder, so I thought that was a red flag. Nitram never got back, but I took a chance and purchased through Amazon. As reviewers said, it was a little tight getting the charcoal sticks into the holder but not impossible. I found that a few swipes with some fine sandpaper on the sticks solved the problem easily. I’m now pleased with the purchase.

The charcoal is fine. I"ll probably enjoy using it. However, it won't be in the D****D holder. The charcoal doesn't fit unless you jam it in causing crumbles of charcoal to fall everywhere. The entire stick of charcoal won't fit so you can only put about 1/3 of the stick in. If there's another way to get the entire stick in, I haven't found it. The holder is a BIG waste of money.

The primary reason I purchased this product was for the charcoal holder. Unfortunately I found the charcoal didn't fit in the holder. Even when sharpening the charcoal up to the fusain color label the square portion of the charcoal stick was too large for the holder. I also found the metal part to be relatively flimsy. The charcoal fusains that came with the holder I would give 5 stars! The only grade of charcoal that did fit was the softest grade (which is round to begin with).

The plastic handle is comfortable to hold and of sturdy construction. The tightening ring is the easiest of all pencil/charcoal holders that I have tried to tighten securely.I bought this predominantly to make use of the last inch or two of Nitram charcoal sticks as I find them too short to use at that length, I'm sure most would agree that there is nothing quite like drawing with a new length of charcoal, and with the Stylus, the feel and expressivity of distance from the page is possible at all times. It is well balanced, with the centre of mass placed at around 1/3 of the way down the black plastic handle. When drawing there is no need to counteract the weight one way or another. As regards the price, it is relatively expensive but is, I suppose, a luxury item for charcoal drawing. This product is not particularly critical to the output of quality work or maintaining good technique, I bought it for convenience and I was willing to pay the price. There are cheaper alternatives but the weight, feel and strength of the Stylus is more pleasant than other holders that I have tried.
