while inexpensive, there is a reason. this product is not worth the plastic it is made of. do yourself a favor and spend a little more money and buy one that the kids can actually use. This gives off a lot of false signals. I highly recommend you do not buy this item....

The assembly was relatively basic and the 8 year old completed it by himself.. Then 2 steps into the backyard playground and it went off signaling dig area. He and is sister worked together sharing the trowel and found treasure in the form of a piece of a drink can. They are now trying to age the item to tell how long it was there. This will accompany them on family beach trips and scout camp outs.

Not sure why but the whole thing smells like rotting trash and dead animal. It’s utterly disgusting! Almost makes you puke, can’t even open the box because the smell is SO bad and gets worse when you open it. Nothing in the box that we can find that would be the cause of the smell (we thought maybe there was a dead mouse in it or something that could explain the awful stench, but there was nothing).

Not sure what some of these reviews were from but this was a gift for my 7 year old granddaughter and it worked really well, I was surprised at its level of discrimination it was capable of. I have a high end detector so I’m no newbie to this. We’ve had a ball with it.
