This is the one and only sharpener that can sharpen my pastel pencils to a point without breaking them, I shall be getting another as a spare

This is an attractive, quality product. It cuts pencil wood well and centers the pencil nicely. I like that it has two blades that are replaceable. Not typical plastic garbage that breaks in a week. If you like quality, non-disposable products and a well sharpened pencil this is your product. This is very nearly an ideally designed product that should last multiple lifetimes.

I've collected writing instruments for 55 years and the last few of those years have focused on pencils, both wood case and mechanical. As far as wood, I have bought many premium pencils from specialty companies in Germany, Japan, and USA. I have tried numerous hand sharpeners (and electric and crank) which I like carrying in my pocket for sharpening "in the field." This M+R is fantastic. The weight is wonderful. It sharpens extremely well - no wood chunks or gouges in the pencil, and as long as you watch what you're doing and don't "over-sharpen" you wind up with a perfect, or near perfect, graphite (lead) point. It sharpens both thin and thicker pencils (up to 9.5 mm thick) because it has two holes, one for each type. It will take longer and more revolutions to sharpen a brand new pencil BUT that is because the wood shavings are so fine. That is the "price" you pay for a perfect point - and that is the reason you get one. The guide holes are set at a slight angle to the blade (unique). The German design and manufacture is evident in the extraordinary quality of such an "ordinary everyday" thing - a pencil sharpener.

I love this little sharpener. I can carry it with me when I travel. As others have said, watch out for the blades with your fingers as they can easily cut you. I like the sharpener spot for cutting colored pencils as I’m not wasting a lot of lead and it keeps the pencil tips from breaking. I’ve had no issues with pencil tips breaking as I do when you’re brought are more of a finer point Similar to if I use the other sharpening hole.I had been using an electric sharpener, which was so convenient, but was always breaking tips or the tips were just dissolve almost shards would come off of them. Using the sharpener I have very little issue with shards coming off for the tips breaking down I can manage the sharpness by turning the pencil as I use it and they tend to last much longer. If you’re in a need for a small compact pencil sharpener or one that does a fantastic job This is the last one you need to look at. I highly recommend it. Thank you for reading my review.

I have Faber-Castell pastel pencils, which I really enjoy. They came with wonderful points, but as I used them, I could not sharpen them with the hand-held sharpener I used on graphite pencils. Frustrated, I bought a Derwent pastel pencil sharpener. Purpose built, right? It was no better. I bought a Prismacolor handheld sharpener and it was wonderful for my Prismacolor pencils, but failed miserably with the pastels. I resigned myself to dull pastel pencils, using Prismacolor for details. I tried once more, but with little hope , and bought this sharpener. To my amazement, it did a wonderful job! I sharpened all my dull pastel pencils and look forward to using them this weekend.

CADILLAC... 'Yes', these are some of the best - MANUAL pencil sharpener's manufactured, on the planet.'No', there is NO bin/container to catch your shavings in [if your looking for that ‘feature’, look another place]... You HOLD IT OVER your trash can or bin AND catch the shaving that way... It's 'old school' - ‘classic’ pencil sharpener, okay. However in return, for this/that minor inconvenience, you are going to find, you’ll get one of the cleanest - smoothest - sharpened wood-shafted pencils, in your writing/art/craft/pencil box you own.The blade is ‘razor sharp’ German manufactured steel [no Chinese stuff here] - AND you’ll find you can sharpen 100's and 100's of pencils, before having to even think of replacing the blade [and ‘yes’, replacement blades are out there for these]. I’ve acouple different styled M+R sharpeners - One’s pushing 30 yrs old and it still sharpens like the day I got it [go figure].The Brass body on this sharpener has nice ‘weight’ to it; making it easy to hold and balance in your hands; it’s simple comfortable - And I’ve large-slender hands [with arthritis, too], and I’ve never had any ‘issues’ sharpening standard size and over-sized pencils, with an M+R sharpener.Their quality and detail with these is excellent...craftsmanship superb...materials excellent and they’ll last more then ‘your’ lifetime, under normal usage. My primary reason for this purchase, was I wanted a ‘sharpen’ on my pencils [use colored pencils for artwork], with more of a ‘medium-fine’ point - Not a ‘needle’, liked by many in the field. AND this style performs exceptionally well on producing that type of a lead point. I’ve never had an ‘issue’ on achieving any desired point, with an M+R sharpener; even with a ‘cheapy’ produced pencil, one can get results...As to ‘child-safe’... My 22 yr old Grand-daughter, started using an M+R sharpener before five - She still has ALL her fingers. My soon to be nine yr old Grand-son, has been using an M+R sharpener since before five and has yet, to incur an injury... Between four children and 8+ grandkids, there’s never been an ‘issue’ with a pencil sharpener about here. For around 10 bucks, I’ve no complaint with M+R and with this latest purchase. You could spend less and buy a cheaper sharpener... It’s what you want and/or need, is my thought. However, if you want a pencil sharpener, that’s going to ‘point’ your pencil and do an excellent job at it, then this you might seriously consider one of these. As I always say - ‘It’s your money...’ -EDB

This product sharpens very well but it has trouble with some charcoal pencils. It works well with graphite and some Stabilo pastel pencils but charcoal pencils not so much. Granted, the bonding may not be strong enough in a particular pencil because it would sharpen perfectly but this perfect tip would fall out in a solid chunk. Exactly what you want to avoid. On the whole though it has worked well with most of my pencils. I have a few hundred I’m sure.
