I love this timer, especially on work days. everything just waters itself. mine is at the back.of my house, sun comes up on the other side, but I hear it click on every morning when Im getting ready for work. only changed the batteries once in 3 years.if it's been very dry I set it for longer. it was great for 3 summers and then the top cracked, and melnor sent me a new one. very easy warranty process. highly recommend.

I like the product and now have two of these. Canadians can get a lower price at Canadian Tire.

I had one of these at my last house, so went with the same one for my new home. After a month the top collar (connecting to the house) broke unexpectedly. I believe I just got a rare defect, or maybe this unusually hot summer had something to do with it. More worrisome was the idea of getting a replacement from the company. Usually that's a big hassle for a relatively minor item (I'm sure many companies plan on that). But Melnor does stand behind their products: on their website I entered the info from my Amazon order and they replied the next day. The new one is working perfectly, and just in case direct sunlight hurt the black plastic collar in Texas heat, it'll have a little shade now.

Purchased this to automatically put more water in my pool during the months that water seems to evaporate a little more quickly. For the most part 5 minutes a day works perfectly. When the sun comes up, the water kicks on and puts a little water into the pool automatically. Once the time is up, it shuts off. This thing is genius. You can also use it to sprinkle your lawn automatically (think new grass) or for a garden. It has a manual on/off if you want to turn the water on, so it makes it very easy to use.

This works great for a simple watering control. Only starts at sunrise but it works great for most used.Only negative is the indicator light does not work but the valve works every day

I ordered this in January. Big mistake. I didn't need to use it until June, when I seriously started watering my garden. The first time I set it up, the sensor completely failed to work, as so many other people have complained here. Unfortunately the "return window" closed in February, so I can't even exchange it. Next time I order a questionable irrigation item, I'll make sure to only order it in the summer, when I can test it promptly and return it if it doesn't work. It's a shame - the idea is great, it is really easy to use, but without a functional sensor, it is useless.

This water timer has been reliably performing as expected. It comes on at dawn’s early light, even on overcast days, and shuts off when it is supposed to. If the batteries (2AA) go dead, the water stops. That means it is safe to leave the unit unattended. I have not used the device long enough to gauge battery life. But the batteries operate a solenoid valve; so it's reasonable to expect that the longer you water, the shorter the battery life will be.The timer was simple to install. No tools were needed. The unit’s connection is plastic and your hose connection is probably metal, so it’s prudent to use a bit of thread sealant, to prevent leaks.“Programming” the timer is as easy as turning the dial to the amount of time you want it to run. It will automatically come on the next morning. The only other controls are ON and OFF. They mean just what they say. This unit unquestionably restricts water flow somewhat. My watering scheme had two impact sprinkler heads linked together with 5/8” by 50-foot fabric hoses. When I added the timer at the water supply, the furthest impact head stalled. No amount of adjusting would get it going. Using larger diameter hoses or shorter lengths might produce different results. That solution was impractical for me, so I solved the problem by replacing the affected impact head with a gear-driven alternative. The timer comes with extra gaskets with wire mesh filters, which suggests you should periodically check the input connection for blockage. I would recommend this product.UPDATE: I encountered a quirk with this unit that I have not seen described elsewhere. An afternoon thunderstorm darkened the sky sufficiently to turn on the local street lights. When the sky brightened again, the sprinkler unit thought morning had arrived and dutifully came on. I manually turned the unit off, then re-selected the time duration. The next morning all was well. I assess no criticism or penalty for this behavior; the device reliably behaved as it is designed to do.

Does really depend on where you have this as the light sensor is very temperamental to daylight conditions. Example was - one morning it was overcast, due to this & its position at the side of my house. It came on later than was timed too! As most local city authorities are bringing in water restrictions for water conservation, & regulating the watering to specific day/times, this glitch may cause you to break the bylaws.

I initially purchased this for a flower box area that I didn't want to die while I was on vacation. It didn't really work for this area because I needed to put it near the end of the hose instead of where it should be which is at the turn on/off knob. I thought I had wasted my money but got the idea to add it to the hose that goes into our small pond that we have to fill a little every day. WOW...this works perfectly because every morning, it comes on for 15 minutes and then goes off. It keeps the pond full and we no longer have to turn it on manually only to forget we turned it on and waste water and money.Awesome product! I love Melnor products. This is my third one at our house. We have the different zone unit that we turn on/off and schedule with our phones (awesome and works perfectly), have a one zone unit for our fruit tree area and this one...the sunrise morning water timer.
