Setting up today. It scanned and found one channel when every TV in my house scans 25 channels. Will try other outlets. The one channel was nice and clear.Main issue is the HDMI does not seem to output, tried two separate hdmi cables and two different TVs. The component output (y/r/w) works fine, but that is not getting me HD output.Still googling for a solution, whether firmware Update or other, but I think it is going back.Other note, the usb based media player feels like an afterthought. Just underpowered and not ready for prime time. It does play the video I have, probably the best I can say is it feels like great technology from 2010.Have not tried the pvr so can’t comment.

I've been using this tuner for the past 18 months with a HD antenna (2-bay Channel Master).Works great.I fixed the antenna on a mast and mounted it on my chimney. Remember "height is King" to get the best signal.I aimed the antenna towards between Buffalo and Toronto and on a good day I can get over 50 channels!Even on a bad day I still get 20 with the major channels. The Interface is easy to navigate. PVR simple as cake. Just plug in an external Hard drive to the USB Port, choose channel and press record.

I've been looking for a good OTA PVR for the last year or so. I tried Tablo TV and was dismayed by the poor quality of the software which kept crashing. I wanted to get a DVR+ from Channel Master but the price is a bit prohibitive. Then I found this little gem for under $60 CAD. For the price, this is a great little gadget you can hook up easily to your HD TV and your indoor or outdoor TV antenna. I connected a 1 terabyte Western digital passport hard drive and have been recording my programs for the last 2 days. The software is not the most user friendly but once you familiarize yourself with the controls, it is quite easy to manage your programs and recordings. at 1080i, a one hour program takes up around 4 to 6 gigs of space. The recordings are saved using a very simple naming convention: Channel name and date (i.e.: CHRO20150309.mp4). You can rename the files if you prefer. The only inconvenience I found is that it does not have a dual tuner and hence you cannot watch TV while watching another program. You cannot access your recordings while recording a program. If there is a way to simultaneously watch and record, I haven’t been able to find it yet. As far as TV onscreen guides goes, you're stuck with whatever the channel feeds you through the Electronic program guide system. Usually, you can get up to 3 days of programing displayed. The tuner captured all my local OTA channels as expected and works fine. To conclude, for the price, this is a great little product.

This box not only allows you to watch your local digital air broadcast signals, you can plug in any USB drive, and PVR anything and everything. I have it set to record all my regular favourites, and all I have to do is watch when I have time. That's it.Simple plug and play set up, and away you go. You can use either the boxes tuner, or use your TV's tuner, depending how you choose to configure it. The only thing I would change is to have the USB plug on the rear of the box, rather than the front. But, if you think you would be plugging and unplugging regularly, the front USB connector is preferable.

Update 12/26/13: I purchased a new antenna with more umph, and WOW! I went from about 21 channels to 39 channels. This unit gets more stations than my tv tuner. I am getting channels in that are so far away, they are not even listed as local stations in my newspaper. I'm sure it's due to the antenna, however this unit is tuning more than the tv.Update 9/22/13: The units are coming out with a newer FW version than the originals. My box had FW V3, I updated it to V10. If your box comes with V8, you do not want to update to V10. The V8 is for the new remote layout. The V10 is for the old remote layout. People with V8 upgraded to V10 are having problems and have to go back to V8 FW. Also, although QAM is not supported, they do have a QAM FW for both the old and new remotes, V12. You can get it from their forums.Update 9/11/13: I bought a URC-WR7 universal remote that works great with this box. The Homeworx has some buttons that are not on the URC remote, however the URC does have 4 favorite buttons as alternatives. If you look at the Media sonic forums, Logitech Harmony supports this unit as well.Original review: I originally purchased this unit about 6 weeks ago and had problems. I emailed customer support at Mediasonic and they responded back very quickly. I was able to return the unit easily. I decided to wait to buy again until after the release of the newest firmware (FW) upgrade and see what kind of reviews it was getting. I checked the Mediasonic forum on their website as well as the AVS forum. Finally decided time to try again and I'm glad I did. After purchasing the 2nd unit, I have no problems. Customer support released a FW upgrade very quickly after customer feedback. It has fixed all of my problems. It works great to pause live tv and recording shows. EPG in my area is only 12hrs, but it works. Some discrepency about watching one channel and recording on another. My original unit would do it about 1 out of 10 times. So far, my current unit has no trouble. This is related to pressing the record button and then turning to another channel. I have not tried it yet during a scheduled recording. According to Mediasonic the unit only has 1 tuner and shouldn't be able to do this. They say the adverts and printed materials were misprints and need to be fixed. I have not heard about anyone else having problems with this. Mine works.I "cut the cord" from cable tv a year ago, but really missed being able to pause live tv and record shows. I primarily stream programming and movies now, a lot cheaper than satellite and cable. I bought a TiVo about 6 months ago and just feel it's not worth the money for OTA tv only. Now that I have this unit, TiVo is gone. This is my sole unit, on my sole tv, in my family room. The entire family uses it. No regrets. This is a very basic DVR, no wifi/internet. No apps. It is not an all in one solution. I have a Roku for that. It is a great tuner and dvr. Picture is just as clear as if the antenna was going straight to my hdtv. I have a 750gb USB powered external hard drive attached and have not had any problems. Time is from the channels and displays in military time.UPDATE: After playing around with the unit I have a revision to the record one channel while watching another. If you use the RF out and set the unit to "loop through" you can record one channel and watch another (through the tv input) without any problem. You just need to change the input on your tv.However, if you are recording a channel, say channel 32-1, then you can change to other subset channels on the unit like 32-2 or 32-3, and continue to record your original channel 32-1. It will not allow you to record 32-1 and change to channel 41-1 on the unit. It will give you the choice to stop recording or leave the channel where it is and continue to record. This occurs regardless if it is a scheduled recording, or I just press record and then change channels.Daylight Savings Time is fixed, as well as some scheduled recording issues as far as I can tell.

After extensively searching online at several sites for a digital HDTV converter, I decided on this unit as being my best option. I have a home theater projection system and needed a source for free over-the-air (OTA) local TV programing. The combination of great features on this unit at this price point really make it an unbeatable, no-brainer compared to what's available. This is the only decent unit I could find that had HDMI & RBG outputs, a PVR and a nice detailed on-screen program guide (EPG). I really only needed the HDMI out and the program guide, so getting the PVR with the timer to digitally record programs when needed, all in one unit was a nice bonus for sure. I'll be honest in that after reading some of the reviews, I did have some doubts and said a few prayers as I clicked on the "Submit Order" button. My conclusion was that many of the issues mentioned in the negative reviews were likely due to a software glitch, that was corrected with the latest V8 software version - which all the recent units (including mine) had. Whew! And knowing Amazoney's great return policy, I thought I'd be OK, if I did have any issues and had to do a return. After having the unit about 4-5 weeks, I must say that I am about 98% satisfied with my choice and the performance and features on this unit. My only minor complaint is that the clock can only be displayed in 24 hr. format - not a big deal, but having the choice to do the AM/PM would be nice. As with many remotes, this one has a only a very rare hiccup of not responding when a button is pressed.(Again, this has been ONLY a very rare occurrence and I have experienced this on several remotes over the years, as very few remotes are flawless). This is also one of the only few boxes that will connect and work with virtually any viewing set-up - whether you have an old analog tube TV, flat-panel HD monitor/TV or home theater HD projector; so you have maximum flexibility encase you upgrade or change your equipment. The picture and sound quality is excellent - right up there with any pay TV digital HD set-top box I have seen. I have an attic antenna to receive my local OTA broadcasts and a small amplifier to boost the signal a bit to feed the signal to 6 rooms in my home. The unit connected and set-up quickly and easily. It auto-searched and found 46 local channels here in the Tampa Bay, FL area - so I was both very happy and surprised that there are so many free OTA channels and sub-channels available; many of which weren't on my previous satellite local channel offerings. The majority of these are broadcast in digital HD 720p or 1080i resolution - which is still a beautiful, sharp picture. So I now get a lot more than I had with satellite and all for FREE!! The electronic program guide (EPG) is a nice bonus and something most HDTVs don't even have. It also has very detailed program info when you press the INFO key twice - very nice to see the details on what's on before you decide what to watch. I recently dumped high cost satellite (over $100/month) and also added a refurbed Roku 2XD digital media player unit (see my review here on Amazon) with Netflix & Amazon Prime to stream movies and TV shows, to replace the majority of what I was getting on satellite. I am absolutely amazed at all the free, on-demand content (including music - like Pandora) available and what is also available on Netflix and Amazon Prime for about 1/5th the cost (about 80% less) of pay TV services like satellite and digital cable. So, I just couldn't justify spending so much coin to keep any pay-TV service anymore. And to this point I'm so very glad I did and I'm sure the content will continue to grow.Anyway, I haven't used the PVR on this unit yet, so I can't comment on it just yet, but I will update my review when I do. I think you'll be quite pleased with the overall performance and versatility of this unit and its likely one of the best choices out there, especially at this price point. As with ALL electronics, I highly recommend reading through the set-up features & choices mentioned in the owner's manual to be sure to get the best and most performance for your particular set-up and situation. Enjoy life and I hope you found my review informative and helpful.
