ATSC Digital to Analog Converter Box

Quick and Easy Setup

The ZAT-970A will have you going digital in minutes. Connect your antenna to the device, connect to your television (via RF or RCA connection), and power everything on. You'll be led through a quick setup for language and time zone, then the ZAT-970A will automatically scan for available channels.

For your convenience, the unit features an on-screen trilingual (English, French and Spanish) menu display, and also allows you to add, skip, or set favorite channels to customize your programming options. For the few remaining low-power analog stations in your area (if any remain at all), an analog pass-through is also provided.

The low-profile ZAT-970A is just 175 x 135 x 33 millimeters, and weighs less than a pound.

Two Connection Options

For televisions with a simple RF antenna input, you'll connect to the television and select either channel three or four on the TV for the ZAT-970A. If your television has RCA audio/video inputs, you're in luck, and can enjoy a better picture and stereo audio connection.

ATSC Compliant

This set-top box is fully ATSC and MPEG-2 Digital compliant, receiving RF channels 2 through 69, and supporting all 18 ATSC broadcast formats, complete with ATSC Dolby AC-3 audio decoding. Translation? You'll be able to enjoy any standard digital broadcast, as standardized by the FCC. Closed captioning and the Emergency Alert System are also both supported.

Selectable Aspect Ratio

Select your picture aspect ratio for either 4:3 or 16:9 TV screens, depending on your set and the current broadcast.

Parental Features

Make sure your children are taking in appropriate programming with Parental Control, with V-Chip technology. A downloadable Rating Region table and lockable channels let you make the call.

Energy Star Compliant

Compliant with Energy Star standards, the ZAT-970A features an energy-efficient design and will shut off when not in use.

Sleeping Mode

The ZAT-970A will be automatically turned off if no remote control button is pressed during the specified time durations.

I purchased this product because my RCA box which I purchased from Walmart 16 months ago started to fail badly.I went back to Walmart and was informed that they no longer sell converter boxes. Since this occurred close to Christmas I thought this was a seasonal thing. I was wrong, as of February they are still not selling them.I needed a box and all I could find for a reasonable price was this item.I had never heard of Zinwell before but the box works very well. It was easy to unpack but it took some time for me to get it set up in a way which worked well with my TV. I have a 10 year old Phillips-Magnavox. For reasons I do not understand the video cables, (Yellow, red, white) connection did not provide the best reception possible. I needed to use the coax connections in order to get the best picture possible.I do not think this is a box issue. I think I just have an old TV that will one day have to be thrown out.I do recommend this product because the picture it provides is very good. You have the choice of what dimensions of picture you want - Magnified, wide screen, etc. on the tv screen. I've had the box for about two months and so far it works very well. It is reliable and, compared with my last box, it provides a clear picture with out the other issues I was facing before (e.g. no picture or a picture that comes and goes). The box's remote does not control the TV, so you will be working with two remotes in order to watch your TV. The informational display for each station is limited to the next program on the schedule and signal information. This box displays signal strength and quality. I understand strength but quality was new to me, and to the best of my memory, is not explained in the owner's manual. To the best of my abilities, signal quality means the level of clarity in the signal. If the signal is strong and the quality is low then you will get an intermittent, grainy picture. If the signal is weak and the quality high then you will get a decent clear picture. All I can say is that this item is worth the price but let's be honest about this. I get the feeling that converter boxes are on their way out and all of us with old TVs are going to have to pay for new TVs in the not too distant future. I hope this box will last longer than the last one.

I've been playing around with three DTV converter boxes over the past three months (, , and this Zinwell), and none of them stands out above the rest. They all do about the same thing, providing excellent picture quality over their analog equivalents, and I can get 27/28 channels with a rooftop antenna in the Baltimore-Washington area. This Zinwell is the latest, and after about 2 months of testing it, here are my observations:Pros:- It has a power button and channel buttons on the front of the box in case you misplace the remote- It displays signal intensity/quality meters each time you change the channel so you can adjust your antenna for best reception- Internal firmware is upgradeable for future updates- Built-in timer changes channels for extending the life of analog VCRs- Great picture quality- Analog pass-through (kind of)- Volume control from this remote (based on TV's current max volume)- Parental controlsCons:- Remote control is pretty flimsy- Power cord is only 3' long so you may need an extension cord to reach a wall jack- Analog pass-through signal is not as clear as without the box- Picks up one less channel than the Magnavox on the same antenna- Built in time clock slips a few minutes over a period of weeks; annoying if you're using it to provide programming to an analog VCR- red LED to tell you it's "off" is an unnecessary waste of energyHaving spoken to others using various DTV boxes/setups, it seems like the deciding factor on how many channels you'll receive is what kind of antenna you're using. Those with rabbit ears inside the house get as few as 4-6 channels; my 18-year old stationary roof-top antenna gets 27-28 as of today.Aug. 2011 UPDATE: It's been 3 years since I first wrote my review, and Amazon has now changed the product photo to one that looks nothing like the model I purchased in 2009. I don't understand why they wouldn't have given it a new model number if it totally changed; you may need to do some research.
