Perhaps my mat board was too thick, but this did not do what I wanted it to do. I guess it was meant for foam core only? In that case, my bad. The blade was bendy and I never got into the right rhythm while using it. If I figure it out, I'll let you know. Resorted to using my regular xacto knife.

After making multiple practice runs, no matter what technique I tried the cutter would wobble up or down and ruin the line. I even taped my project down and clamped my straight edge to the table and as the blade cut it would move away from the edge. If you’re looking for a way to cut a thin matte, let alone a thick standard matte. Also the blade won’t lock and stay in place and will not cut all the way through. Don’t use this tool it will destroy your project. If you like jagged edges go for it.

just got opportunity to try today. So disappointed, blade bent trying to pierce mat board. so instead of cutting into board it just left an indent. I used a metal guide rule , pressure , even precut with reg exacto blade to see if would do bevel edge.. Nope .I don't know how those who tried and loved it managed. Show me..

I am a beginner but figured out how to work this cutter before watching videos since it didn’t have instructions. I have a mat cutting board so I wasn’t worried about my lines being straight or the paper moving. I used a $1.25 poster board to practice on and my cuts were not straight and clean as I expected after lowering the blade a few times to get it to cut completely through. The cuts were beveled which is why it received 1 star but were jagged. With the blade being as sharp as it is, the cuts should have been very clean. After watching videos to be sure it wasn’t user error, I’m convinced this cutter is pure junk.

Review is of: Mat Cutter 45 & 90 Degree Bevel Mat Board Cutter with 3 Replacement Blades Professional Beveled Cut tool for Art Picture Framing Foam board Card board (Blue + 3 Replacement Blades)---- TL/DR: Works; it's quite small. Comes with 3 blades.Getting a nice clean corner cut relies on you starting and stopping the cut at the precisely right place. The tool just helps you cut a straight line, if you use a straightedge. If you don't you're not going to get a good line. Like they say, use a pad underneath so you don't cut the desk/table; use a straightedge and make SURE it doesn't move. Also plan your precise start and stop positions, otherwise your corners will be messy. (pencil marks/dots help)You only get 45 degree and 90 degree cuts with this, but if you use a standard mat you will get a nice outcome. Just beware you may need to practice some to get the best results. This is good for cutting small mats for displaying art/photos that are unusual sizes, such as wide. Not suitable for oval or other curved cuts.

I had three mats to cut -- not enough to justify a real investment. That said, I wish I had read the reviews here from Verified Purchasers (not the Vine "I got this free").This thing is junk. It doesn't cut through the board, you can't lock the blade, even with a straight edge it is jagged and wobbly, and the blades dinged up very quickly (even with a good cutting board underneath).Into the trash this goes!

This tool is an absolute necessity for any working Artist - full stop. Although many/most artists don't sell their work framed, or even matted, taking up the matting aspect is something we should all do. It isn't expensive; certainly not like matte board used to be, and one gets to include the aspects of the matte board into the overall piece. It may take a time or two using it, and likely making a few mistakes, to get the device mastered, but it isn't difficult - hell I was matting in jr. high school - but it can be intimidating getting started. Just expect to mess up a time or two, learn from them, and then bust it out and whip those flat works into a higher level with kickass matting!
