Installing an oil filter can be a massive PITA. Slipping filter-wrench band, hard to reach places (I'm looking at you Honda!), never knowing if the filter is screwed on too tight, or not tight enough... The small knob at the end of the K&N filters is pure genius. It fits a size 17 (I think) socket, allows you to remove with ratchet extensions, torque to whatever the owner's manual says. As a filter, the performance is as good as any brand. As a part to be removed and replaced, it is positively the best. For a couple of $ more than brand El-Cheapo, you get excellent quality filter, and the convenience of a really well-engineered part.
