Cyanotype is the “original” sun-printing process, one of the earliest photographic techniques. Discovered in 1842 and distinctive for producing rich, Prussian blue monochromatic prints, Cyanotype was popular well into the 20th century as an inexpensive method for reproducing photographs, documents, maps and plans (hence the enduring architectural term “blueprint”) and famously, for making impressions of biological specimens in the field (“photograms”).

Harness the power of the sun to make detailed prints from virtually any object that casts a shadow: tools, toys, plants, leaves, stones, sand, string, lace, etc. Simply place the object on the sensitized surface and expose to sunlight (UV). Potassium Ferricyanide are the technical chemical names that create the magic! Use a digitally-printed photographic negative (an inverted black and white photo inkjet-printed onto a transparency*) instead of an object to create full-resolution photographs on paper or fabric. Great for photographers, mixed media artists, printmakers, quilters, kids and more, the cyanotype process is easy, forgiving, quick, magical and fun. Capture the nuance of every shadow—a fun group activity for any age!

I had never heard of cyanotype before so thought I'd give it a go. Wow, I was so impressed with the process and it's so easy to do. This set of sensitizers was very easy to measure, mix and apply to watercolor paper. The instructions were clear and I couldn't have asked for more impressive results.

These were great for my class!!! BUT they are definitely not accurate on how many prints are possible with the amount of chemicals. I did buckets hats (yes it is different than paper) but the chemicals did not last long at all. I did 6 hats, 2 sides (bucket hats) and that was the end of those chemicals. Yes I understand that fabric absorbs more but it STILL only did 6 hats.

I bought one pack to learn cyanotype and after using it I decided to get the second pack. It is easy to use (instructions are included) and I was satisfied with the price. It took quite a long time to learn and actually get good results. I used the mix on different types of paper. It did not work at all on some paper and worked very well on some other paper. I don't know why yet. It seemed to work the best on mixed media paper. You definitely need a dark, dark place for covering the paper with the mix and for fully drying the paper.I think anyone who is a creative person will be able to appreciate this item and use it in various ways.
