I bought this set because I didn't have any wood chisels. I used one on a new door jamb to enlarge the deadbolt striker plate inset and the chisel I chose worked reasonably well. My only complaint is that they're REALLY LONG and that means you are far away from the chisel tip and the actual working area. I like to be closer where I can truly see what I'm doing and this made the job more difficult because of that.

Very sharp. I bought these for a specific task and they performed perfectly for making a square hole in soft pine a little larger, and now I'm happy to have these for use as needed. I love the strike plate on the back of the handle.

Needs to be sharpened when received. Took a few minutes for each chisel. Used the 1 inch to clean out some mortises in douglas fir and western maple workbench legs. Retained edge for me to smooth out the four mortises without having to touch up the chisel. Case is pretty good. Plastic edge guard is serviceable.

Just got them and will update this review after using them thoroughly. What I like:The case is great. Protects edges and keeps chisels organized. The steel of the chisel is continuous thru the handle and creates a sturdy striking surface on the end.Rubberized handles will help make for a non-slip grip.Value. Irwin makes good to great tools that last and the price for this set is very reasonable. What I don't like:Nothing so far. What I don't know;I sharpened the chisels with a fine diamond grit hone before using them as they don't arrive as sharp as they could. They took a fine edge fairly quickly but I don't know how well they will hold that edge. That is I don't know the quality of the steel, only time and repeated use will tell. Though I trust Irwin Tools as they haven't disappointed me before.

I am very happy with my purchase of this product. Received sharpened, I sharpened them again anyhow to remove the protective film on them. But, could well be used straight out the protective cover. The chisels protective holder is very nice and built surprisingly well .The chisels are very solid and well built as well, I like that the steel of the chisel is running through the handle to create a head that can be used with a regular hammer. And these chisels are keeping a sharpened edge so far, and I have used on some oak. I would purchase this product again, and would highly recommend this product to anyone.

Sharp out of the case (Nice case, well-built little blade covers too), VERY solid steel one-piece with a grippy handle that is pretty large even in my big hands (not too big, just hefty and curvy/ergonomic). I haven't even sharpened them yet, but so far wood carving of all sorts has been wonderful! If I was a serious professional I'd give a more in-depth review but as the first set of seriously well-built chisels I've ever owned, I am very happy with these! A good mix of 3 sizes, though I will be investing in a larger set one day. Make sure to get a good mallet! Though these have open steel bottoms, they can obviously take a serious beating.

They are longer than I expected, but that was a pleasant surprise. They worked well enough rot out of the box to chisel out the wood beneath a door latch to get a better fit. I got a wet sandpaper / glass sheet sharpening system from Peachtree Woodworking and spent an hour tonight polishing the backs and putting a finer edge on the whole set. They took an edge well. Very nice tools for the price and I appreciate the case and the plastic edge protectors.Photo #1: Chisels straight from the box with a $5 bill in there for size referencePhoto #2: The back of the widest chisel showing the griding marks (they are construction chisels, not woodworking quality... but they can be with some polishing time)2020 update: I had a project around the house yesterday where I needed to shave down 1/4" of end grain wood from a 3/4" board. After my polishing fun from 3+ years ago, these things were hella sharp and very easily controlled. I took nice curls off of the wood with much more control than I was expecting.

If you are like most amateur woodworkers, you have a drawer of a dozen wood chisels you can't sharpen well enough to use, and many with messed up blades because you used it for things they weren't designed to do. So you buy another cheap wood chisel and in a few uses it is shot too. So you ask yourself, "Why should I pay almost $40 for three chisels?" The answer is because these things are built to last.First, the chisel goes all the way through the handle and has a flat plate at the top to completely transfer any tapping to the blade. You never have to worry about a plastic handle cracking or chipping. Second, these do not have a bevel edge. That's an edge which tapers down to a certain point and then a second angle to get the sharpened end. This results in a steep cutting angle and a two, angle blade to sharpen. This is difficult even for someone good. These chisels have just a single bevel all the way to the tip. Anyone with any sense can get these razor sharp and keep them that way.I bought these to help me replace all the door knobs and latches in my house (about 30) and it saved me tons of time and effort, not to mention the cussing and swearing. They cut through wood like butter and were extremely accurate. MY wife thought the $40 bucks was worth every penny because she didn't have to listen to my yelling.
