I have used another product what is 1/3 of the price. I can't tell the difference to be honest. Maybe I am not good enough.

Slow to ignite using propane burner. pops agressively throwing hot debris. be careful and light outside isolated from combustible materials. When lit, burns very hot as binchotan does. Imparts great flavor on our shichirin grill. OK value

Unfortunately most of the pieces in the bag were on the smaller and narrower size, which means that even for my tiny schichirin, i had to light and orgenise quite a lot of pieces, not to mention reusing, due to small size almost impossible to save something for proper reuse, so for the price plus the shipping to my country, i'm quite dissappointed, had a bit better results with other Ippinka packages in the past i think.

Glows in yellow hues (1200’C, 2100’F) compared to Fogo mesquite wood in red hues (900’C, 1700’F), so much hotter.Burning life is astonishingly long, out lasting even dense acacia wood. Considering this binchotan burns hotter and longer, it’s an astonishing product. Along with Japanese tradition, the aroma is clean and almost imperceptible. I loved it!Next, I compared the physical properties of this binchotan to the “Bincho Grill” charcoal made in South East Asia. Bincho grill is on the left and binchotan is on the right in the photos.Bincho Grill smell: very slightly smokey and woodyReal binchotan smell: imperceptibleDensity: about 20% less dense than real Binchotan by my estimationBincho Grill colour: black to whitish surface, shiny black on fresh cross sectionReal binchotan colour: never whiter than dark gray, darker insideSound: the real binchotan resonates much better. It has a higher pitch when struck against each other, with a much firmer rendition. Bincho grill is lower pitched and muted in comparison.Users give Bincho grill lower marks on flavor than comparable options and I agree. The higher density and pronounced pitch indicate that Binchotan is dense enough to burn extremely hot, compared to alternatives. The smell and colour differences indicate that it will not impart excessive flavor on the food, preserving the full potential of your dish and the Japanese grilling tradition. So go grilI some wagyu!

This is the real deal...it has the solid clink almost like ceramic...for lighting its good to use a chimney starter first or a butane torch ... you only need a few pieces to last a whole meal/cook session...yes a bit expensive but goes a long way

Do NOT use these for grilling burgers and steaks in your backyard. No extra benefit and you'll needless waste money. This is however, ideal for indoor (or outdoor) grilling on small yakitori grills (search in amazon). The charcoal gets fiery hot and is completely smokeless. If doing indoors, I put the yakitori grill under a 600cfm vent hood in the kitchen (no smoke but that carbon monoxide will still kill). You only need a small amount to put out a blazing amount of heat and skewers of chicken thighs will cook in about 2 minutes per side. Butterflied chicken thighs might need 3-4 minutes per side. Best of all, when done, pick up the binchotan with a metal tong and place in a dutch oven. Put the lid on and it quickly extinguishes. The next day, wipe off the charcoal with a brush or paper towel and then keep re-using it until it is all gone.Pro-tip for lighting: if you're using these small binchotan sticks, place the binchotan in the yakitori grill and light it up with an Iwatani butane torch ("creme brûlée torch"). For larger sticks of binchotan (other brands), I put the binchotan in a chimney starter along with briquettes. The briquettes get going fast and in about 20-30 minutes, the binchotan is ready to be transferred to a yakitori grill.

Works as described, low smoke, high heat, long burning. I use it indoors in a high rise apartment with 2 fans blasting air outdoors for ventilation.

When these lit they keep a strong and constant amber heat. It took me a while to lit them since I was not using any fluid.
