About this item

  • These squares are made from a solid block of granite that has been carefully machined to ensure accurate right angles. Black granite squares are more durable than pink granite and help to avoid scratching.
  • Granite precision squares come with one large face and two edges that are finished flat and square to each other. It consists of two faces precisely perpendicular to each other, forming a 90-degree angle.
  • A granite square is used for checking the squareness (90-degree angle) between two surfaces or edges. Check 90 degree squareness of the X & Y axes when in it's horizontal position. Check perpendicularity of the Z axes when in it's vertical position.
  • Granite squares are often used with other measuring tools to verify the squareness of components & assemblies. They are used in applications where high accuracy & reliability in squareness measurements are required like in precision machining & tooling.
  • Squareness is +/-.0.0002". Square has a round hole so it weighs less and is easier to handle. An inspection certificate from the manufacturer is provided (Not NIST Traceable).

Checked using two different Starrett steel toolmaker’s squares on a grade A granite surface plate. The two Starrett squares are blackout square to each other.Neither face is very square to the edges, despite what the product description says (see photos). The two edges are closer in square to each other, but light still shows through (see photo). For the price and the product description, I expected the squareness result I’m seeing for the two edges, but I expected a similar result between the edges and one of the faces. Also, when placed upright on an edge on the surface plate, the square rocks ever so slightly, so the edges do not appear to be all that flat either.I know you get what you pay for, but I expected a better match to the product description (and the inspection paperwork) between the edges and one of the faces.

The first thing you do is have the square checked for accuracy on a granite plate or CMM, Order a Pelican box for transport and get rid of the cheap box the square is protected by. Its really junk.
