1984 300D turbo...I ran into a problem with installing this voltage regulator from Hella. My alternator was not OEM. I had to use a metal file to remove some metal from the thick plate that the cap with the printing is mounted to. I had to do this because one of the LONG bolts that hold the alternator body together interfered with that thick metal plate from being mounted. I had to use a hand file, so it took awhile. But, on the good side, the brushes were nice and long, the spring load seemed adequate to provide steady contact to the shaft. It all tested good with my multimeter. The printing on the cap says it is rated at 14.1v. The multimeter confirmed this.Why did I suspect the voltage regulator? A few odd things. One of the two main dash lights was going out, the rpm gauge stuck at 500rpm regardless of speed, power window (driver door) didn't work. All this in a couple of minutes. Checked voltage at the battery: 15.04v. I later discovered that my old voltage regulator was missing the big blue striped resistor had fallen out of its "cradle" and was gone. That explained the really high 15.04 volts. Glad I caught this before it cooked my battery. I hope this Hella voltage regulator works for a long time! Even though I needed to file away some metal to get it to work with my non-OEM alternator.
