Recommend you watch some you tube videos prior to installing this as the directions get a bit confusing.

This hoist is just what I needed to take off or put on my truck topper. Once installed it just works. I wasn't sure how much weight the black smaller ropes held. So I contacted customer service. They immediately replied to my question. Telling me the small ropes have a break strength of 1200 lbs. I was impressed they replied as fast. Hoist is rated for 200lbs. max, so that makes me think the limiting factor is the pulleys. Saying all that I would buy it again, or other products from them.

I had some reservations about ordering a soft truck cap. However, the price was right given It would only be used a couple of times a year. Read the directions carefully and lay everything out before you start to assemble. Assembly can be a bit tricky. You will definitely need to people to get the cloth cover assembled to the frame. Functionally the topper performed better than i could have hoped. Being very lightweight I was able to easily suspend it from my garage sealing to keep it out of the weather and out of the way when not in use.

Even though it works well I wish the pulleys and hooks were a little more heavy duty. I installed a couple more lag eye bolts so I could run a set of straps the take the pressure off the pulley system since it will be hanging for the better part of the year.

I was unable to find a product with a reasonable price that would hoist my PU topper off my truck. So, this product does work for that purpose. Could it be better ... absolutely! First, the rope and pulleys were good quality with no complaints. Installation instructions were a little too brief and could have been better, but if you have some logic and DIY skills, you'll be fine.My biggest gripe is with the supplied connection mechanism. Two straps with adjustable buckles are what's supplied. You are instructed to use knots to attach the hoisting ropes to the straps. Instructions say to adjust the knots or the buckle to get proper equal tension before lifting. Both options are clunky to nearly impossible. The description says "self leveling" ... NOT. Again, even the instructions say to a make sure there's equal tension on the lift ropes before lifting. I see no way that lifting gets leveled by itself! FYI, I found a great product to simplify this - Rope Ratchet. For $30-40 you can get 4 adjustable ratchets that are easily attached to the lift ropes and snap into the web strap. Why can't the manufacturer supply these???Lowering the lifted object is hard. Pulling the rope forward to release the locking lever triggers the release. The problem is the the lowering rope friction works to close the lock lever. It's safe, but slow, as you get less than an inch of lowering before it closes the lock lever on the rope.

I bought this to store a sunfish sailboat from the joists in my garage to free up storage space beneath it. I consider it to be a fair price considering someone has clearly put some thought, engineering, and effort into its design and manufacturing. The hoist works well and as advertised - I'm happy with my purchase and it's freed up a lot of space in my garage. The biggest negative is the assembly, which takes a bit of time but I'm also not sure it could get any easier given the number of variables at play.Pros:-Works as advertised.-Easy to use.-Priced fairly.Cons:-Assembly will be lengthy

Good quality product, easy to install and works well. Beware on 2 points though - 1) to get the max 10' vertical rise out of the system and your wall is within ~ 5 feet of the hoist system you'll have to mount the eye bolt at a significant angle to the system which presents a potential issue with the lines running through the organizer and 2) being a 200# system you need significant downward weight to get enough slack to unhook whatever you're lowering once the load weight is removed. I had to attached a separate rope & pulley to the block & tackle to pull down on to give the necessary slack to unhook my load. Both of these nuances are missing in the manual. Other than that it's a good system.

I usually don't write reviews, but this product is so well designed and performs its function so well, I couldn't remain silent. Sure you might be able to put together a similar product by purchasing the individual parts in a local hardware store, but you wouldn't find the specialized parts found in this hoist that make it such a delight to use. Even if you did find all the necessary components, I doubt you would save much money and you certainly wouldn't save time. The block and tackle is pre-assembled and, due to the great design and clear instructions, is easy to install. I've had my Harken Hoister a year now, and although I don't use it often, it's invaluable when I do. I use it to store my tonneau cover when I need an uncovered pickup bed. I used to depend on my neighbor to help me remove the cover; not at easy task at about 145 lbs and the weight is all forward of the body when lifting it from the bed. Then there was always the risk of damage to the pickup. Now, I don't have to find anyone to help; one person can easily lift and lower it. And storage isn't an issue as the cover fits nicely between the raised garage door and the ceiling. If you need a hoist that is reliable, easy to use, and want to avoid the headache of trying to design one yourself, the Harken Hoister is definitely worth the price. I'm absolutely delighted with this purchase.

The hoister was reasonably easy to install and works great hoisting objects up. Unfortunately, the locking mechanism always grabs onto the rope, no matter what angle I try it at. This means that the load will not come back down. I've even tried the rope horizontally and it still catchese. The only way I can get the load back down from the ceiling is to climb on a ladder and hold the locking mechanism open manually. Maybe I'm doing something wrong, but if so, I can't see what. The product is useless if I can't get my things back down...
