I found this file works well if you use minimal down pressure and use lots of light strokes. If you try to be agressive, it can chatter some. Once I worked out the light strokes thing, it worked really well.

Quite good performance, each different fret crowning file I use has its unique positive and negative functions. This one is very sharp and leaves a smoother crown radius finish than other crowning files I've tried. This file's corner edges however are also very sharp and may cut into a fingerboard if you tip too far off the center radian which I can do with my other favourite file to form and position a stubborn crown. I did finish grind the aforementioned sharp edges to avoid slip ups. It's also more comfortable to shrink tube a handle wrap on there, those edges are also quite sharp and can hurt while doing 24 frets and 48 fret ends.A pretty good tool which can be developed and finnessed by the user.

So I did some crowing with this tool and my results were not all that great. It seems to be a copy of the "Fret Guru" which I probably will end up purchasing. Since I haven't used the Guru yet I can't directly compare the two but I'm hoping it will be as good as the reviews and youtube videos show. Save your money and get the Z file from Stew or the Guru. You'll be happier in the end. I used it on a low budget guitar so I wasn't too worried if it marred things up. I'm glad I did. I just don't think the file part has the correct geometry to get a nice rounded dome shape we all want.

I built a partscaster using an old Squier neck. Using a fret rocker I found a few high frets. I was able to get them filed down and then crowned with this tool. Worked great. I am not a luthier but I have guitars so I know how to work on them a bit. This is a great addition to the guitar toolbox. Worth the money in my opinion.

I have a cheaper Chinese Crowning file from a simple luthier kit I bought. It's not aggressive and leaves a very smooth finish. This file IS aggressive, so it quickly re-crowns, but it leaves a pretty gritty surface texture behind. Frets require quite a bit of polishing to smooth them out after using this file. It works well, and is a good tool, but leaves a rougher finish behind post-use.

I did a fret levelling and then crowning on my Taylor 110 and Yamaha LL16 guitars. This was the first time these frets had been levelled so there was plenty of fret material to work with. When trying to use this file, rather than crown the fret, it barely touched it and instead dragged over the wood of my fret board causing damage which I had to sand out. Both these guitars are jumbo acoustics and both have the standard size fret wire installed. Seems like the valley that the fret wire sits in is too deep for a normal sized fret wire so no use to me, I do not recommend this file.
