After reading multiple articles which pointed out how much easier it COULD be to use a dial indicator for some things (and having a hand-me-down digital model I have to agree) I started looking for a good one. Of course I was sure the price would be somewhere between astronomical and "too rich for my blood," but I was very pleasantly surprised when I found this one.I read more than half of the reviews (both positive and negative) and then noting that I would have to be careful not to overtighten anything, I ordered it.Much to my horror when the package arrived (a day early, and thanks, Amazon!) it looked as if it had been trampled by a herd of cattle, and I was certain that the device had not survived the trip. However, opening it and then assembling it, I fould that it (a) the red case was completely intact and unmarred, and (b) everything was in good working order.I am a woodworker, and this weekend a friend who is a fellow woodworker came over and at my request he brought his Starrett version of this tool. Then we did side-by-side comparisons, and I was sure that the Starrett would give more repeatable readings, etc. But we were both pleasantly surprised to find that: both gave the same readings in 23 of 25 different measurements, and surprisingly the Starrett was the one on the first of those which gave differing readings (i.e. wasn't repeatable) while the Grizzly repeated the same reading 3 times. On the other, there was a consistent difference (both were repeatable) of .001".We spent about 4 hours measuring 25 different things on my table saw, drill press, and router table (no jointer - sorry - be we plan to do that at my friend's shop next weekend) and at the end my friend told me that he was extremely impressed. While I can't say how well the dial indicator will hold up, assuming it does, bang for the buck is higher on this one than on the one costing 5 times as much.My friend liked it so much that he ordered one for his son's shop, so I think he must have been as impressed as I was.I'm still learning more effective ways to use this tool (digital and analog are NOT always the same critter), but so far I am very satisfied with this tool and I would order it again and/or recommend it to friends.

I was in a previous career a professional auto tech for over a decade and used several high-end dial indicators; so this experience is my reference for basing this review. This magnetic base, stand and indicator seemed of relatively comparable quality to ones back in the day that were hundreds of dollars. The only place I could notice any difference in quality from a more expensive one was in the dial indicator itself and the magnetic base. The actual dial indicator seemed a slight bit more flimsy and not as durable as pro grade ones and the base's magnetic clamping force seemed a bit less but this was still fine for my use as I only needed this to setup a one-off automotive ring and pinion gear swap. Most importantly it seemed accurate enough. This set also came in a decent blow-molded plastic case for storage which I appreciated. All in all it's at least to me remarkable that nowadays one can order and receive in two days a precision measuring device of this quality for only $30.

Well built, easy to use, performed perfectly. Best bang for your buck. Just as good as the way more expensive ones.

I got this amazing unit for $12 Canadian after signing for the no-fee Visa card. Personally, sometimes I will sign for these things since I feel the 4 minutes to do so outweighs the $20 I save on my first purchase. Seriously, $12 for what turns out to be a very solidly built, extremely precise measuring device. Now - I LOVE precise things, so this is an absolute no-brainer for me.Magnet base works smooth and easy and is very strong. Doesn't budge. Incredible precise device that measured a piece of paper at 4/1000's of an inch. I can get my tools to a theoretical tolerance of a quarter of that?! I'm in.

Great value. I can't attest to the longevity of this kit as I've only used it once so far to check the runout of the rotors I replaced on the car. But,this works great and the kit Includes everything shown including carry case. Dial gauge is smooth and easy to read. The magnetic base and arms have all the standard adjustments. If your not a pro machinist this will more than do.

There's a lot to like about the Grizzly G9849 Magnetic Base/Dial Indicator Combo. The base is substantial and the switchable magnet holds it strongly to any steel or cast iron surface. There are enough rods and clamps to make it useful in many situations. There were a couple of issues that prevented me from awarding 5 stars. The first one is that the bolt that holds the dial indicator to the rod clamp is quite difficult to tighten. There is no screwdriver slot or socket head, so the only way to tighten the bolt is by using your fingers on the round, lightly knurled, small diameter head. It's difficult to get your fingers between the indicator body and the rod to exert enough torque to keep the indicator solidly in place. I may try to grind a screwdriver slot in the head so that I can use a tool on it.One of the rods has a 'micro-adjuster' in the center of it that is supposed to let you make small adjustments in the indicator position. I find this feature to be pretty useless. The joint is unstable, moves too easily, and it can screw up your measurements if you're not careful. I usually avoid having the micro-adjuster in the setup by moving the indicator to the same side of the adjuster as the clamp that joins the 2 rods. I would prefer to have a single, solid rod and will probably get one in the future. The base is decent, but it would be more useful if there were more than 1 tapped hole in it. I would like it if there were 1 or 2 more tapped holes, in other faces of the base. One more thing. If you are looking for an indicator to measure the runout of precision spindles, this is not the best one to choose. To measure runout accurately, you are better off with test indicator with a 0.0005" graduations.

Bicyucle wheel truing stands can be downright expensive, so I rigged up a stand using a old car brake rotor, an old bike fork, and this little guy. I place the needle against the rim and spin it. When a wheel is warped, the needle moves and shows where, and how warped on the dial. Works like a charm. The base is heavy and the magnet is strong. The build quality seems very good, as the entire unit is heavy to keep it stable. I like the magnet on/off switch, although I don't need it, I can see how it would be useful in a lab, or a work environment where it would get more use. The arms are easy to adjust, but I really had to crank the knobs hard to get the knobs the stay put. The needle and dial are just perfect for my needs, and show VERY slight imperfections.Good product at a great price.
