I bought this thing from the Grizzly website. I really do love their tools, I have the bandsaw, jointer, and planer. I don't want to post a review there because their website is notorious very clearly turns 1 star reviews into 5 star reviews.I thought this thing would be awesome. All cast-iron and very heavy duty, supports any kind of tilting and angles I would care about, and according to the manual it supports chisels up to 1-1/8" shank. What could go wrong?A few things:This thing was clearly just not designed or tested or something. Some examples:* There are gibs for adjusting the table sliding resistance that you will just not be able to reach. This is something you'll have to adjust a lot, and it will always bring you great pain. You'll want to tighten these such that the table doesn't move when dropping the chisel down, but is still easy enough to move with the wheel.* The lever will run into the wheel for sliding the table left to right. This gets REALLY annoying.* The stops for moving the table left-to-right slide with the table and run into the threaded rod that turns the table. This means some stop positions can't be done.* Those same stops use a really awful hand-turning screw. They're just not reliably tight.* The wheels don't really give you enough leverage to move stuff around very easily.* The clamp really is terrible. It’s not long enough to clamp a 2x4 to the fence, you need spacers to do that.* What’s really great about the clamp is that it’s attached to the table on some long holes with a nut and bolt / locking washers. The clamp slides along these holes a lot, weakening the clamping force to the fence, causing the workpiece to rise up with the chisel. It’s super annoying. And last but definitely not least, the documentation was wrong about supporting 1-1/8" shank chisels. They are going to correct their documentation online. There was a correction that was issued ex-post-facto for this. The machine supports up to 28mm shank chisels, which translates to ~1-13/128", according to my calipers. I don't know about you but I've never heard of a 28mm shank chisel. They're just 3/128" off from supporting 1-1/8" chisels. The icing on the cake here is that the mortiser comes with two bushings: a 5/8" bushing and a 3/4" bushing. The 5/8" bushing is the correct size; 28mm. The 3/4" bushing however doesn't fit because well... it's 1-1/8". My theory is someone messed up the machining in the manufacturing plant, and instead of remaking their inventory or recalling the units, they updated the documentation and updated the bushings, and I happened to get one that was missed.A well-built machine for sure. But not a well designed one. Go with the powermatic. It's cheaper and it's better.

The machine itself seems like it us going to be pretty good. Not quite as heavy as I would have liked. Even locked down the head is a little flexible. And the clamp that you use to clamp the wood in place is junk. Very hard to use. Think I can make one of my own design and will then have a pretty good machine .
