Grampa's Story

Grampa's Weeder has been pulling weeds and their roots for over 100 years! Invented in 1913 in Seattle, Washington, it quickly became a must-have tool for gardeners in the Great Northwest. Production stopped in 1941 when metal was needed for the war effort, and unfortunately, it didn’t resume after the war.

That all changed in 1999 when my husband, Greg, discovered my mother’s old garden tool in her garage. Once he figured out how it worked, he was hooked! Soon, Grampa's Gardenware Co. was born, and we started hand-making this classic tool in our Oregon garage. Our family was excited to bring “Grampa” back to gardeners everywhere.

Over the past 25 years, our small family business has come a long way. We’ve moved beyond the garage (thankfully!) and now proudly sell thousands of Grampa's Weeder tools worldwide.

This simple lever, designed over a century ago, still remains one of the most effective weed removers on the market. It saves knees and backs while being using no chemicals. What worked well in 1913 still works well today. It’s true—"Everything Old Is New Again!" and Grampa's Weeder proves it to us everyday.

This tool is a very quick and easy way to uproot weeds without having to bend over, and the steel construction will ensure it will last pretty much forever, unlike plastic imitators. However, the weeds can be difficult to remove from the end of the weeder, requiring you to get your hands dirty removing them, and the tool doesn't work at all on plants that are rooted too deeply, like oak seedlings.

It was such a lovely day I did a lot of yard work. I love this tool! You really do not have to bend over much. Just center the tool over the center of the weed , step down on the lever and bend the tool back. The weed pops out every time. However, the tool does not always pull up the entire root of the weed. Sometimes the tool breaks the root when you bend the tool back. When this happens I just just put my weed killer granules down the hole, so even though I did not get the entire root that weed is not going to bother me anymore. My neighbor gifted me all their dandelions , so I have to start early every year getting rid of weeds that invade my yard. Grandpa was right this is an easy tool to use. You can store it easily with other yard tools. It has a real wood handle and when you remove the weed from the end you pull out dirt. It leaves a small hole that’s why I fill it with weed killer so that weed does not grow back and no other weed can either. The tool is very simple but is kinda pricey at $40, but it does work well.

This tool is light weight, well made, strong. But most of all it works! Crazy how something so simple can work so well, with very little effort. I have many many thistle in my pastures and this is helping me so much. It is SO satisfying to hear that pop when the root breaks. This is actually fun to use. I take it on my walks. Oh it also doubles as a walking stick. My dogs don't like it much because I'm always stopping to remove the thistle and other weeds. The handle is strong, I didn't get the steel handle. I'm thinking it would get heavy after 1 1/2 - 2 hours. Oh, I'm 75 yr old female. I really don't think you will be disappointed.

I purchased this to give my father as a Christmas gift, as he loves working out in the garden. He is in his 60's and would put a knee mat down and do a lot of pulling that way going around the yard or garden. However, I don't like how that can tweak or hurt his back. So when I saw an ad for this I thought this could be great!Arrived quickly, and feels like a great quality tool. Not something cheap that will weather or break by next year. My dad received several really cool gifts this year, but once Christmas was over he went out and started to pluck around some weeds in the back yard and by the fence. He usually has a bucket or wheel barrel he will have nearby so now he can just pull them up, drop them, and keep going.10/10 for being a useful and unique gift for someone who works outside in your life. He uses this any chance he can get, and loves going around hunting for them now. Plus it has saved his back so much!

It’s very easy to get rid of the unwanted weed in your garden by using this handy tool. Very durable, this is important, because my previous plastic weed remover broke in a month. Fast delivery. I am happy with this product.

Grampa’s Weeder is an absolute game changer for yard work! The long handle and stand-up design make it so easy to remove weeds without the strain of bending, pulling, or kneeling. The bamboo handle feels sturdy yet lightweight, and the 4-claw steel head is incredibly effective at gripping and removing weeds right at the root, even tough ones. It’s intuitive to use—just press it into the soil around the weed, twist, and pull, and the weed comes out cleanly. I’ve used it on a variety of weeds, and it works consistently well, even in harder soil. The durable construction ensures it can handle multiple uses without any signs of wear. Not only is it functional, but it also feels like a high-quality, eco-friendly tool thanks to the bamboo handle. It’s made yard work much faster and easier, and I no longer dread weeding my garden. Highly recommend this tool for anyone who wants to save time and effort while keeping their lawn or garden weed-free!

Ok, I have so much good to say about this thing, it's a bit ridiculous! I received my Grandpa's Weeder yesterday (one day earlier than expected😍, yet another reason for my 5 star review).I was so excited to use it, that I busted it out today and went to town. I "worked" in my yard for over 2.5 hours. I said "worked" because it hardly felt like the typical weeding work that I'm accustomed to. It was awesome to say the least. I'm sure the novelty will wear off some day, but there were so many audible "wow!", "oh man!", "holy cow!" etc.!! I just kept being amazed at the ease of which this tool makes removing weeds! Here's a little more detail:I primarily used the tool in my lawn areas--where I had hundreds (literally--hundreds) of dandelions. However, there were at least 20 or so weeds I removed from garden areas. I will say that it has rained here (Northern Utah) on and off over the past 3 days. I'm sure that helped the success of the tool.Did it remove all of the root of every weed? No, but I was in awe at how many weeds it got with a 3-9 inch root system. And of those that it didn't remove a good sized root, it still got a decent size.Did it leave a hole after removing the weed (like I had read in a few reviews)? Yep, but I figure those holes are great for aerating my lawn! Was it easy to use? YES! SO EASY!! I'm a 50 year old woman in decent physical shape and I worked for 2.5 hours in my yard today, removing weeds with this incredible tool. This was AFTER I returned home from playing 2 hours of pickleball (intermediate level--making it in and of itself a pretty decent workout). It was actually fun to use....and so SATISFYING!While using the tool, I had two neighbors come over and see it in action. They too were amazed. To one neighbor I admitted that it didn't get EVERY weed root system completely. And then I went on to show her and it went 4 for 4 weeds perfectly! We were so impressed. Can't say enough good about this tool. Very efficient, sturdy, high quality, etc. And I love that I'm supporting a small family business. Way to go guys! I wish I had discovered this tool about 20 years ago! Maybe it hadn't been found and re-produced back then?

Wonderful tool. the cheap fakes suck, but this tool is great. Gets roots and all. in wet weather can get some soil and leave a hole, but they fill in quick and having less weeds is better.
