About this item

  • Drilling with forstner bits to achieve a flat bottom hole or to start a deep hole turning project like on a larger vase or vessel is essentially impossible with a standard length forstner bit. To remedy this issue we have developed an extra long, heavy duty steel extension that allows you to secure a 3/8 inch shank forstner bit into the end collet.
  • The forstner bit extension gives you additional 8-1/2 inches of reach to bore deeper into your projects. This will help you create larger diameter starter holes or help when you need to drill in just a little further than the standard bit length will allow. The extension can be used with forstner bits on drill presses, lathes with a drill chuck installed (drill chuck not included) or with a power drill.
  • One of the most common uses for the forstner bit extension is for woodturners who need to bore out starter holes on larger vessels. However, the extension works exceptionally well for projects like salt shakers, pepper mills or even wood turned beverage mugs. Contractors use the extension when they need to bore deep holes for running cables or wires and they also use it for joining larger timbers.
  • The forstner bit extender is made from solid, heavy duty machined steel. It is designed to be used with forstner bits only. The collet inside diameter is 3/8 inch. This tolerance is very tight and designed to accept forstner bits with shank sizes of 3/8 inch or slightly smaller. Please note that some forstner bit manufacturers produce bits that say 3/8 inch shank size when in fact they are not. If you measure your bit shank and it is 3/8 inch, your bit should fit once the set screws are loosened
  • The collet outside diameter is 25/32 inch without the set screws protruding outward. The reason this is important is that as we mentioned earlier, some bits may have slightly different shank sizes. This means the set screws may protrude outwardly from the collet. The minimum size hole this extension will allow you to drill is 13/16 inch. Forstner bits and Machinery shown in pictures are NOT included.

As other reviews describe perfectly, the extension is nice if it would actually fit 3/8" shank fostner bits. Unfortunately they undersized the opening for bits and is not compatible with most 3/8" shanks

It seems to be well build and does what it says it will do. Worked perfectly in my application where I had to drill deeper than the shank of the bit would allow.

Was a little disapointed in this bit extender that even though it says that it fits a standard size shank and Amazon had this listed as frequently purchased with the bit I purchased the bit did not fit this extender without modification being required on the bit shank. On top of the sizing the set screws seem to have both stripped out when tightening down on the first bit used. I would not recommend.

The question in my mind was, "will this fit the shank of the forester bits I have without being off-center?" The answer is yes.So, if you have 3/8" shank bits this works fine. If you have other bits, it will not be centered.

If, for whatever reason, you need an extension for your forsner biti(s), this is a good choice. Solid tool steel; bit clamps in place with two set screws. Allen wrench included. Comes in various lengths.

It's durably built. You can tell it's well constructed when you first pick it up. The screws does hold the bit in place very securely. I found that to be the case even when only one of the two screws is used. But I due recommend using both when possible. As stated on Amazon. All 3/8 inch bits are not the same. I had three - one didn't fit at all, another only fit deep enough to reach one of the screw holes (which was sufficient), a third one fit completely where both screws could be used to secure the bit. My suggestion would be to get the smallest 3/8 inch shank you can find or get the one that's from the manufacturer of the extension. The one that fits perfectly I found at Ace Hardware, so that's another option. The others I had came from Harbor Freight Tools and Home Depot. Not a kock on these great outlets, just saying their 3/8 shank don't appear to perfectly fit the extension from this manufacturer.

At first I was hesitant about whether or not it would work as described. Rest assured this tool is a quality piece that works as described.I use it to extend my Irwin wood auger bits. My bits have the faceted drive ends and they fit almost snugly into the Fulton bit extender. When the allen screws are tightened the unit runs with no apparent runout. I didn't try using a dial indicator on it but, I couldn't see or feel any wobble while drilling through 2 inch oak floor joists. YMMV
